Ambient Supports Mac OS With Ultra-Fast USB Modem Solution With More Mac Products to Follow.

FREMONT, Calif..--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 24, 1999--

Barely three months after completing its buyout from Cirrus Logic, Ambient Technologies, Inc. announced today its first Macintosh product.

The new MD567X is a USB USB

Type of serial bus that allows peripheral devices (disks, modems, printers, digitizers, data gloves, etc.) to be easily connected to a computer.
V.90 modem chipset & reference design solution. It supports Mac 8.5 (or higher) and Windows(R) 95/98 operating systems. Ambient's USB solution eliminates the 115.2 Kbit bottleneck of RS232 connections and delivers the ultimate in high-performance and affordability. This new product signals Ambient's growing focus on supporting both Mac and PC Platforms. Ambient is also planning to release a PCI (1) (Payment Card Industry) See PCI DSS.

modem solution for the Mac market in the near future.

The MD567X is a software upgradable 56K USB modem chipset with a complete set of industry-standard features for data, fax and voice applications. It is compatible with Mac OS 8.5 or higher as well as Windows(R) 95/98.

It supports all requirements for PC-based communications -- including Voice IS-101, Fax Class 1 and all industry-standard AT commands for data. It meets Microsoft(R) Windows(R) TAPI (Telephony API) A programming interface from Microsoft and Intel that is part of Microsoft's WOSA architecture. It allows Windows client applications to access voice services on a server.  standards and exceeds Microsoft(R) PC 98 specifications for Windows(R) and legacy applications.

The MD567X's robust controller and powerful DSP (1) (Digital Signal Processor) A special-purpose CPU used for digital signal processing applications (see definition #2 below). It provides ultra-fast instruction sequences, such as shift and add, and multiply and add, which are commonly used in math-intensive  can support even the most demanding MS-DOS MS-DOS

gaming applications. Compliance with ITU-V.90 standards ensures worldwide interoperability with major Internet providers.

Ambient's goal was to design a high-performance USB solution that would meet, or exceed, strict USB v1.0 standards without sacrificing quality or performance.

"We tested our solution against products from major modem manufacturers using state-of-the-art TAS TAS

And it's priced lower too," said Fred Schuckert, Ambient's president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board. .

"We achieved all of our design goals," added Clement Lam, vice president of sales and marketing. "Supporting both Mac and PC platforms will open up a lot of opportunities for us and our OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  customers."

The MD567X owes its superior performance and capabilities to the sophisticated architecture of its controller and DSP (digital signal processor A digital signal processor (DSP) is a specialized microprocessor designed specifically for digital signal processing, generally in real-time computing. ). The controller's embedded RISC processor uses a unique caching architecture that enables the use of lower-cost memory chips. The controller code can be modified in a "C" code development environment and the flash memory interface permits software upgrades.

The DSP allows multiple simultaneous tasks and supports specialized functions. Many advanced features are already built in. Each component's highly integrated design minimizes part count and board area. The single platform design serves all levels of product, from basic feature sets to full-featured speakerphone applications, without additional circuitry.

The MD567X delivers the latest technology for hands-free computer telephony, which is becoming increasingly important for today's advanced modems. It offers a complete telephony interface with features like telephone emulation for headset applications, Caller ID, voice mail, answering machine, call progress detection and tone generation.

It also includes ITU (International Telecommunication Union, Geneva, Switzerland, www.itu.ch) A telecommunications standards body that is under the auspices of the United Nations. Comprising more than 185 member countries, the ITU sets standards for global telecom networks.  V.80 compliance for videoconferencing. All voice features are fully compliant with Microsoft(R) Unimodem V and TAPI (telephony applications programming interface) standards, and all voice commands comply with Voice IS-101 command standards.

The Ambient MD567X is a powerful USB solution that is incredibly easy to use. Now Macintosh owners can experience its exceptional performance. Connecting an MD567X based USB modem is extremely easy. Just plug it in and install the device driver. There are no complicated settings to worry about, and the USB cable is impossible to plug in wrong. You don't even need a power cord. The Ambient MD567X insures superior performance, simplicity, flexibility and reliable worldwide Internet access. -0-
