Independent Laboratory Completes Beta Testing under the Supervision of

Southern Telecom

Ambient Corporation (OTCBB:ABTG), a leader in Power Line Communications technology ("PLC"), announced today that it has concluded successful testing of pre-production inductive couplers under the guidance of its development partner Southern Telecom Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Southern Company (NYSE: SO) that provides long-haul and metro dark fiber.

The testing for electrical characteristics took place at an independent laboratory near Atlanta, Georgia, with results indicating that the pre-production inductive couplers are acceptable for use on 15 kV Class feeder lines. In effect, with these and Ambient's prior test results, Ambient's technology can be potentially deployed on most utility distribution systems in the United States.

Ambient's patented couplers are designed to overcome the traditional obstacle to the utilization of existing electrical distribution system for high-speed data communications. The couplers are an integral component of Ambient's proposed power line-based communications infrastructure.

Ambient began a field trial with Southern Telecom earlier this month. The field trail is deploying Ambient's inductive coupling and PLC network over Alabama Power's (another subsidiary of Southern Company) electric distribution system just outside of Birmingham, Alabama. This effort is an important step in bringing Ambient closer to full commercialization.

Dr. Yehuda Cern, Ambient's Chief Engineer stated, "The successful test results support Ambient's coupling technology and PLC architecture. Initial test results show that Ambient's basic PLC design will allow production of couplers that are fully compliant with 15 kV Class standards, which is the most common distribution voltage class in the United States. The successful testing supports Southern Telecom's confidence in Power Line Communications technology and Ambient's unique role in this technology."

On July 8, 2002, Ambient Corp. jointly announced with Consolidated Edison Company of New York, Inc., (Con Edison) a subsidiary of Consolidated Edison, Inc. (NYSE: ED), the conclusion of a significant phase in the demonstration of Ambient's Power Line Communication technology on Con Edison's overhead electric distribution system. These tests achieved throughput rates from 10 to 16 Megabits per second (Mbps) over the medium voltage lines. Throughput rates on the low voltage lines, the rates that could be provided to consumer premises, range from 3.5 Mbps to 7 Mbps. More than six months of continuous deployment have demonstrated system reliability.
