Amber Wave ships AmberSwitch Ethernet switching hub.

ACTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 20, 1995--Amber Wave Systems Inc. announced today that AmberSwitch, the high-performance, low-cost workgroup LAN switching
''This article addresses packet switching in computer networks.

LAN switching is a form of packet switching used in local area networks. Switching technologies are crucial to network design, or to that minority of LANs that are used outside the home.
platform, will start shipping in production next month.

The company also introduced a new AmberSwitch switched LAN card See network adapter.  supporting 10BASE-2 media, as an optional add-on to the product's original 10BASE-T design. Users can mix and match the two media in increments of eight ports among the four slots in the AmberSwitch chassis.

"With our initial shipments of AmberSwitch, we reach a significant milestone in our goal of pioneering real LAN switching at prices nearly comparable to hubs," said Amber Wave Chairman and Cofounder co·found

Curt Gridley. "We intend to continue to push the price/performance curve and drive new features into the market, so that users can deploy practical workgroup applications that take advantage of our new, advanced switching technology."

Designed for low-cost manufacturability and high-end performance, AmberSwitch sets a new price/performance benchmark for the LAN switch A network device that cross-connects clients, servers and network devices. Also known as a "frame switch," stand-alone LAN switches are common in all Ethernet networks. A four-port switch is also typically built into a wired or wireless router for homes and small business (see wireless  market. At an entry-level price of less than $2,000 for 8 switched ports, AmberSwitch's entry price point is a fraction of the price of competing products costing $8,000 or more. Its unique, scalable architecture allows the switch to expand up to 32 ports at a cost of $175 per port, a fraction of the current prices for comparable switching products ranging from $400 to $1,000 per port or more.

"Amber Wave continues to lead the market in the commoditization Commoditization

of Ethernet switching," said noted networking industry analyst Fred J. McClimans, principal of De-ci-sis Inc. in Herndon, Va. "Products like AmberSwitch will allow this technology to become easily affordable and available for a wide range of workgroup applications. The key for users is that Amber Wave is delivering high performance switching in an easy-to-install package at a low price."

"Because of AmberSwitch's modular design In the context of systems engineering, modular design — or "modularity in design" — is an approach aiming to subdivide a system into smaller parts (modules) that can be independently created and then used in different systems to drive multiple functionalities. , we are able to support a variety of media options," said Cofounder Gregory T. Hopkins. "Our new support for 10BASE-2 will enable us to quickly support international customers by meeting the needs of the installed base of thin net in major European markets. This will help us as we establish our network of key European distributors this year."
