Background becomes a Bond-style M when he replaces Cold War veteran Sir John Scarlett Sir John McLeod Scarlett, KCMG, OBE (born August 18, 1948) is head of the British Secret Intelligence Service (MI6). Prior to this appointment, he had chaired the Cabinet Office Joint Intelligence Committee (JIC). as MI6 chief. The sports-mad 53-yearold is a well-known figure on the foreign circuit and his move heralds a switch to a less secretive agency.
