Amati and Euristix Partner to Develop ADSL Element Management Solution; ADSL View Element Manager is First for Amati Allegro Access Concentrator.

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 17, 1997--Amati Communications Corporation (NASDAQ NASDAQ

ADSL - Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line
, and Euristix, Ltd., a Dublin, Ireland-based international telecommunications software developer, today announced a cooperative agreement for the development of an SNMP-based ADSL element management system. The alliance will capitalize on the expertise of both companies to deliver the most manageable, controllable and easily integrated ADSL management system on the market today.

Under the terms of the agreement, Amati will license Euristix RACEMAN EMSX Element Management System technology. Based on the EMSX technology the two companies will then develop an SNMP-based element manager to support Amati's Allegro ADSL Access Concentrator. The new Amati ADSL View Manager will enable service providers to have complete ADSL network control and administration using SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. Data are passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device (hub, router, bridge, etc.  for services connected to the Allegro.

The recently introduced Allegro is a major step forward for the service implementation of ADSL. It is the first fully SNMP manageable ADSL access concentrator and the first to permit full SNMP control of not only the central office modem, but also the subscriber modem, in-band.

"The agreement with Euristix shows further commitment by Amati to enable future ADSL services," said Jim Steenbergen, President and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board. , Amati Communications..

"By offering a high-level management interface, Amati is permitting the service provider complete visibility into the ADSL network infrastructure -- a key feature if the services are to be offered as rapidly and as universally as the potential market is demanding."

"Amati's decision to adopt a comprehensive Element Management Framework technology in EMSX reflects a maturity in their understanding of the management needs of North American and international Public Telecom Network Operators," according to Robert Winters, Regional Director of Sales and Marketing, Euristix.

ADSL View Manager

The new Amati ADSL View Manager will be the first to provide a comprehensive view of activity on and throughout Allegro, an important capability as virtually every networking and internetworking product uses SNMP to study, manage, access, and evaluate a device's performance.

The NT-based ADSL View Manager will provide visibility, status monitoring, basic alarm management, software download, and basic performance management of the Allegro -- all in an intuitive, Windows-based graphical user interface graphical user interface (GUI)

It will be capable of managing multiple Allegro racks encompassing thousands of ADSL modems/lines. The combined Amati/Euristix solution will also enable a future interface to popular higher level system managers such as Hewlett Packard's OpenView, IBM's NetView, and Sun Microsystems' SunNet Manager.

Allegro Access Concentrator

A central rack-mounted system, Allegro has one to four shelves which interface with up to 48 subscriber ADSL modems. The shelves can include data connections, video cards or both. The top shelf contains an SNMP agent on the Management Interface Card (MIC) which provides management support for both the rack and the individual cards. The other shelves have a Management Interface Extender (MIX) which relays management requests to cards on the other shelves such that the MIC can support up to four shelves. An SNMP management station may communicate with this agent using UDP/IP Refers to the use of UDP packets over IP. UDP does not guarantee reliable delivery, whereas TCP does. See UDP.  over an 802.3 Ethernet connection.

Allegro's architecture permits a single IP address to functionally manage up to 48 individual ADSL connections. MIB objects are identified using ASN.1 syntax. See SNMP, RMON, OID and ASN.1.  and SNMP interface software is based on Amati's extensive experience in developing and testing ADSL services.

Amati's ADSL SNMP Management feature permits thousands of ADSL connections to be managed, administered, and maintained by a single management system. It supports an Amati developed enterprise MIB for monitoring general ADSL performance for detailed maintenance and administration of specific modem features and functions, and for software upgrades to central office and remote equipment.
