Amati Announces Overture 8 ADSL/DMT Modem for Internet Access; Provides Connectivity Over Ethernet for High-Speed Transmission of Video and Data Over Standard Phone Lines.

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 25, 1996--Amati Communications Corporation (NASDAQ NASDAQ

U.S. market for over-the-counter securities. Established in 1971 by the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD), NASDAQ is an automated quotation system that reports on
: AMTX), today announced a new version of the Overture 8 ADSL/DMT Modem specifically designed to meet system needs for Internet access See how to access the Internet. .

Key to the new design is the Amati Core ADSL/DMT technology that enables Internet access at data rates as high as 8 Mbps downstream and 640 Kbps upstream, 60 times faster than basic rate ISDN ISDN

and up to 250 times faster than existing dial-up modems.

The new Overture 8 ADSL/DMT Modem for Internet Access adds direct Ethernet connectivity, using 10BaseT, to both the subscriber and the central office units. This is the first 8 Mbps ADSL See DSL.

 modem with Ethernet available commercially.

And as with all standard ADSL/DMT modems, the new Overture 8 provides the high-speed data transmission over standard phone lines while still permitting voice traffic on the same connection.

"Although interest in the Internet grows daily, the slow rate of existing dial-up analog technology frustrates users -- they're typically creeping along the Internet at speeds of 28.8 Kbps or less. Even relatively small video, graphics and audio files slow response to almost unacceptable levels," said James Steenbergen, President and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of Amati.

"Our new Overture 8 ADSL/DMT modem will allow broadband service providers to provide Internet-ready, high-speed transmission to subscribers up to 18,000 feet from a central node, with no additional installation required," he said.

The new ADSL/DMT modem deploys the latest Discrete Multi-Tone Discrete Multi-Tone (DMT) describes a version of multicarrier DSL modulation in which incoming data is collected and then distributed over a large number of small individual carriers, each of which uses a form of QAM modulation.  (DMT See DSL. ) technology from Amati, a technology developed to provide high-speed data modems and access products for ADSL service providers. Because ADSL operates over the existing network infrastructure that connects more than 600 million subscribers to the telephone network, any existing phone user is a potential Internet user over ADSL.

Overture 8 Modem for Internet Access

The Overture 8 demonstrated at Supercomm 96 supports the 384 Kbps upstream data transport at the full CSA (1) (Canadian Standards Association, Toronto, Ontario, www.csa.ca) A standards-defining organization founded in 1919. It is involved in many industries, including electronics, communications and information technology.  standard line length. Future versions of the product will be designed to support upstream data at rates as high as 640 Kbps. The modem is capable of also providing data connections at longer lines, greater than the normal CSA requirements. At these extended distances, equivalent to the telephone company required RRD RRD R.R. Donnelley

RRD Removable Rigid Disk
RRD Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment
RRD Radio Regulatory Department
RRD Regimental Reconnaissance Detachment
(Revised Resistance Design standard or approximately 1300 ohms of mixed gauge copper wire), the Overture 8 can offer downstream data rates of 1.5 Mbps with upstream transmission at either 384 Kbps or 160 Kbps. Key to this bandwidth flexibility is the standard DMT-based capability of automatic rate adaptation permitting the maximum data rate available on any given connected phone line.

Rate Adaptation

Unlike non-DMT-based ADSL modems, the Overture 8 ADSL/DMT modem provides for standard rate adaptation as described in T1/E1 specification T1.413 for ADSL. The Overture 8 automatically modifies the connected data rate to allow for distance extremes or noisy environment, providing the maximum bandwidth for any line conditions.

In operation, the Overture 8 will attempt connection at the maximum rate first (8 Mbps). If the line condition does not permit this bandwidth, the unit will re-establish connection at a lower data transmission rate. The capability to automatically adjust to the characteristics of the line and provide the optimum performance per line is inherent in the DMT standard implementation of ADSL.

Internet Service Connectivity

The major advantage of an integrated 10BaseT connection is that it allows the modem to directly connect to an industry standard WAN interface for easy subscriber turn-up and connectivity.

The subscriber modem (ATU-R See ATU. ) provides an integrated 10BaseT (Ethernet) interface for direct subscriber connection to a local workstation, PC, or remote access router A network device used to connect remote sites via private lines or public carriers. The router is required at both ends and provides the protocol conversion between the internal network (LAN) and the external network (WAN). See remote access concentrator and remote access server. . The remote unit is equipped with a POTS Splitter to separate the voice frequencies from the data-carrying portion of the spectrum.

The central office modem (ATU-C See ATU. ) also includes an Ethernet access port per subscriber to permit router, bridge or Ethernet switch interfaces to directly attach to the ADSL line. The unit is 1RU high, designed for rack mount in either a 19-inch or 23-inch rack. The unit also includes an integrated POTS Splitter for simultaneous voice and data See SVD.  transmission.

Overture 8 ADSL/DMT Access System

The Overture 8 ADSL/DMT modem design will be available in a system configuration for Central Office applications later this year. The same key DMT technology that provides the stand-alone units performance is the core technology for the shelf base design. The Overture 8 Access System will provide up to 12 subscriber modems per shelf connected over a common Ethernet interface. The Ethernet connectivity provides concentration of the multiple ADSL/DMT data connections and is expected to permit even more economies of scale as the network equipment interface can now handle 12, 24, 36 or more subscriber connections. The design permits the higher cost of router or bridge connections to be shared for multiple users which should help to prove the business model needed to assure a truly ubiquitous service.

Interoperability

Key to ensuring the availability of a truly ubiquitous ADSL service is interoperability of the modems used in the service. The establishment of standards, such as the T1.413 standard, enables vendors to design to a set of parameters and features common to all users. Amati is dedicated to the interoperability of ADSL/DMT modems and designs products to meet the set standards. Amati enables any interested vendor to test their products with Amati products as they become available for evaluation.
