Amateur Football: Ship bury league misery by plundering Challenge Cup; Wirral Sunday.Byline: BY ROB JAMES Rob James can refer to:
SHIP buried their disappointment of finishing runners-up in the Wirral Sunday League's Premier Division title race by lifting the Challenge Cup following a narrow 1-0 victory over Lancelyn 1-0 at Cammell Laird For the football team see Cammell Laird FC. Cammell Laird, one of the most famous names in British shipbuilding during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, came about following the merger of Laird, Son & Co. of Birkenhead and Johnson Cammell & Co. last weekend. The victory marked the Wallasey outfit's third appearance in the final in five years, and proved an apt reward after losing in last year's final. For Lancelyn, it is back to the drawing board for the League's oldest club, who have still never won the trophy in their 30-year history despite reaching the final on three occasions. Sunday's game was badly affected by a strong wind which Ship defended against admirably during the first period. And they survived a 19thminute scare when a rasping effort from Colin Davies was tipped onto the bar and over to safety by John Barlow John Barlow was an English diplomat and spy in the time of Henry VIII. Barlow was intimately involved in the King's attempts to secure a divorce from his first wife, Katherine of Aragon from the Pope. . Lancelyn continued to press, but failed to take advantage of the conditions and as the half progressed, it became more likely that Ship would score first. The game's only goal came in the 29th minute when the Lancelyn rearguard rearguard Noun 1. the troops who protect the rear of a military formation 2. rearguard action an effort to prevent or postpone something that is unavoidable Noun 1. failed to clear from a long throw-in, and the ball sat up perfectly for Lee Howson to drive home from eight yards. After the break Ship had the wind in their favour, but Lancelyn skipper Steve Padmore - ably assisted by young Danny Beattie and Stewy Jones - were more than equal to the challenge at the back and gave adequate cover to stand-in goalkeeper, Ian Howard who was rarely troubled. Likewise at the other end, Dean Corris and Mike McGree failed to make little headway against a Ship defence which had Steen Hazelhurst and John Coburn in commanding form and it became obvious that one goal would be enough. The Wirral Sunday League are currently accepting applications from new clubs for 2005-06.
