Amarillo: adding space to civic center.Work began this winter on an $11.4 million expansion of the Amarillo Civic Center The Amarillo Civic Center is a multi-purpose convention center in Amarillo, Texas. Built in 1964, it consists of multiple facilities including:

Already considered one of the nation's best municipal civic centers for a city of Amarillo's size, the center will expand from 270,000 to 340,000 square feet. The versatile Heritage Room will convert into 20 separate rooms for breakout sessions. The center's South Exhibit Hall is being upgraded with a new floor and new floor boxes with electrical and fiber-optic cable. A Spanish development of the Roman atrium, it is comparable to the Italian cortile but provides more seclusion, possibly due to Moorish custom. A truly versatile complex, the Amarillo Civic Center also offers a 5,000-seat arena, a 2,300-seat performance hall, and the majestic Grand Plaza, which can host meetings for up to 1,100 and banquets for up to 900. |
