at the 5th Annual Joint Meeting of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons & American Society of Transplantation to be held in Boston, Mass., May 14-19, 2004 (www.ATCmeeting.org).

AmCyte will be presenting preclinical data for its prospective Phase I/II clinical safety trial, entitled "Encapsulated Isolated Primary Human Pancreatic Islet Transplantation pancreatic islet transplantation The transplantation of a Pt's own pancreatic islets–pancreatic islet autograft into the liver via intraportal injection postpancreatectomy, mandated by severe chronic pancreatitis 2º to small duct disease, pancreas  with Low Dose Short Term Immune Suppression in Patients with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus type 1 diabetes mellitus Brittle DM, insulin-dependent DM, juvenile-onset DM Endocrinology A severe form of DM caused by ↓ endogenous insulin production by the pancreas, which comprises +– 10% of DM Clinical Extreme hyperglycemia, lability of glucose ." The preclinical studies examined the functionality of encapsulated islets in culture and in vivo in vivo /in vi·vo/ (ve´vo) [L.] within the living body.

testing. AmCyte's encapsulation technology protects transplanted islets from immune destruction and allows physicians to transplant islets without immune suppression. Additionally AmCyte has developed a broad set of technology and know-how addressing human islet isolation and maintenance.

The data from the presented studies show:

-- AmCyte is able to test isolated islets over time for both

function and clinical manufacturing safety.

-- AmCyte is able to store and accumulate isolated islets for

transplant, during which time endocrine functions of the

islets are maintained, giving AmCyte encapsulated islets a

minimum shelf life of one year.

-- AmCyte's proprietary encapsulation protects islets in a

"Since these mice were immune competent and we did not treat with any immune suppression, the fact that we were able to reverse blood glucose blood glucose Diabetology The principal sugar produced by the body from food–especially carbohydrates, but also from proteins and fats; glucose is the body's major source of energy, is transported to cells via the circulation and used by cells in the presence  for up to 100 days in this xenograft setting is very encouraging," said Dr. Carolyn Huntenburg, AmCyte's Senior Director of Clinical Development. AmCyte's data will be on display at the afternoon session of the conference on May 18.

AmCyte Inc., located in Santa Monica, Calif., specializes in islet transplantation therapy to treat diabetes. AmCyte has developed novel encapsulation technology to allow transplantation of insulin-producing islets without chronic immune suppression. The company is developing Regenerated Islets utilizing its proprietary adult stem cell technology to scale up the supply of transplantable islets to meet clinical trial and patient needs.
