Introduce Two-Year Pilot Program to Address Communications Gap

Between Patients/Caregivers and Physicians

Leading a statewide workgroup to improve the quality of Alzheimer's health care, the Alzheimer's Association The Alzheimer's Association, incorportated on April 10, 1980 as the Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Association, Inc., is a non-profit American voluntary health organization which focuses on care, support and research for Alzheimer's disease. , Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Chapter, and California Department of Health Services Department of Health Services may refer to:

The goal of this unprecedented initiative is to improve the quality of health care for people with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias by educating consumers (patients and caregivers) to build more effective partnerships with their doctors to assure the best possible care for persons with dementia.

Funded with $1.1 million as part of a three-year, $2.4 million grant from the California Department of Health Services, this portion of the initiative directly addresses issues surfaced in the Alzheimer's Association Communications Gap Survey (a), conducted by Roper Starch starch, white, odorless, tasteless, carbohydrate powder. It plays a vital role in the biochemistry of both plants and animals and has important commercial uses.  Worldwide, indicating a gap in communication between health-care providers and those who care for Alzheimer's patients. (The other part of the larger state-funded initiative focuses on physician education.)

"We know there's a disconnect disconnect - SCSI reconnect  between what caregivers and physicians say they discuss about treatment and caregiving when family members are first diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease," said Debra Cherry, associate director, Alzheimer's Association, Los Angeles Chapter. "Through this initiative, we'll help bridge that gap and build strong, lasting partnerships."

The Alzheimer's Disease Health Education Initiative translates physician management guidelines (Guidelines for Alzheimer's Disease Management, prepared by the California Workgroup on Guidelines for Alzheimer's Disease Management in 1998 and currently updated) into a brochure and educational workshop for patients and caregivers.

The pilot program will be conducted in both English and Spanish and begins with today's launch event and ensuing en·sue

Alzheimer's disease, a progressive, degenerative disease A degenerative disease is a disease in which the function or structure of the affected tissues or organs will progressively deteriorate over time, whether due to normal bodily wear or lifestyle choices such as exercise or eating habits.  of the brain, affects 4 million Americans, and 19 million Americans say they have a family member with the disease. Alzheimer's affects one in 10 people older than 65 and nearly half of those older than 85. The average lifetime cost of Alzheimer's disease, per person, is $174,000. The total annual cost of Alzheimer care in the United States today is at least $100 billion.

The Alzheimer's Association is the premier source of information and support for the 4 million Americans with Alzheimer's disease. Through its national network of chapters, it offers a broad range of programs and services for people with the disease, their families and caregivers, and represents their interests on Alzheimer-related issues before federal, state and local government and with health and long- term-care providers.

The largest private funder of Alzheimer research, the Alzheimer's Association has committed more than $100 million toward research into the causes, treatment, prevention and cure of Alzheimer's.
