Alvin Ailey dancers announce construction of new home.

 Dance Foundation has announced plans for the construction of a new dance complex, complete with a series of studios, a black box theater For the theater in Oslo, Norway, see Black Box Teater.
The black box theater is a relatively recent innovation, consisting of a simple, somewhat unadorned performance space, usually a large square room with black walls and a flat floor.

 Mayor Rudolph Giuliani announced a city grant of $7.5 million to launch the project at a press conference on Wednesday, April 25, 2001.

The Foundation has agreed to purchase a building on the northwest corner of 55th Street and Ninth Avenue, currently owned by WNET Wnet Windows Networking

. The existing building will be demolished and a new building will be constructed. The architects for the project are Natan Bibliowicz and Carolyn Iu.

The building is scheduled to be demolished on June 1, 2002; Ailey's new home will open in Spring 2004.

The expanded facility for Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation will have enormous benefits for all four of the organization's main components: Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is a modern dance company based in New York, New York. It was founded in 1958 by choreographer and dancer Alvin Ailey. It is made up of 30 dancers as well as artistic director Judith Jamison and associate artistic director Masazumi Chaya. , Ailey II, The Ailey School and Ailey's Arts-In-Education and Community Outreach programs, including AileyCamp.

The new building will have particular impact for The Ailey School, which is currently hampered by a severe shortage of studio space and must maintain a waiting list for certain programs. It will also allow The Ailey School to better serve students in its groundbreaking Bachelor of Fine Arts The Bachelor of Fine Arts, usually abbreviated BFA, is the standard undergraduate degree for students seeking a professional education in the visual or performing arts. Also named in some countries the Bachelor of Creative Arts or BCA.  program with Fordham University.
