Aluminum. The AFS A distributed file system for large, widely dispersed Unix and Windows networks from Transarc Corporation, now part of IBM. It is noted for its ease of administration and expandability and stems from Carnegie-Mellon's Andrew File System. AFS - Andrew File System Aluminum Div. panels and presentations offered information on a variety of topics, including discussions on inclusions, quality issues in net-shape castings and designing a molten metal supply system. During his report, "Molten Metal Supply System Design--An Integrated System Approach" (04-085), V. Srinivasan, General Motors Powertrain, described a new integrated system approach adopted to design the molten metal supply system for the production of in-line aluminum lost foam engine block and head castings. Srinivasan detailed the factors involved in designing the system and how to determine what works best in different facilities. The Aluminum Div. sessions also included a presentation on "Quality Issues in Aluminum Net Shape Castings" (04-075). The authors, G.K. Sigworth, GKS (Graphical Kernel System) A device-independent graphics language for 2D, 3D and bitmapped graphics images. It allows graphics applications to be developed on one system and easily moved to another with minimal or no change. Engineering Services, and C.H. Caceres, Univ. of Queensland, explored the scientific knowledge on the quality of aluminum castings and presented equations that give the mechanical properties of net shape castings as a function of defect concentration. The authors also looked at the effects of iron-bearing intermetallics and porosity porosity /po·ros·i·ty/ (por-os´it-e) the condition of being porous; a pore. po·ros·i·ty n. 1. The presentation centered around the types and formation of inclusions as well as ways aluminum metalcasters can avoid them. |
