Altiris Announces Ongoing Support of Unix by Delivering Inventory Solution and SW Delivery Solution for Unix Systems.

Integrated Enterprise Reporting With the dramatic expansion of information technology, and the desire for increased competitiveness in corporations, there has been an increase in the use of computing power to produce unified reports which join different views of the enterprise in one place.  

Altiris(R) Inc. a leader in system management solutions that lower the cost of owning and managing IT resources, today announced version 5.5 of Unix Inventory Solution(TM) and Unix SW Delivery Solution(TM).

Both products demonstrate Altiris' ongoing support of Unix and Linux operating systems Operating systems can be categorized by technology, ownership, licensing, working state, usage, and by many other characteristics. In practice, many of these groupings may overlap. , and enhance the customer's ability to manage and report on both Windows and Unix inventory and assets from a single Web-based infrastructure. Both platforms can be managed from a single Web console, and IT personnel can also deliver software to both clients without leaving their desk.

Unix Inventory Solution

Unix Inventory Solution 5.5 is another solution that has been optimized for seamless integration into the newly architected Altiris eXpress(TM) platform announced Oct. 29, 2001. The new expanded version captures significantly more information, such as usage, NFS (Network File System) The file sharing protocol in a Unix network. This de facto Unix standard, which is widely known as a "distributed file system," was developed by Sun. See file sharing protocol and WebNFS.

All information captured using Unix Inventory Solution is stored in an open SQL SQL

Unix SW Delivery Solution

The new Unix SW Delivery Solution is a software delivery product that automates software upgrades, remote delivery of software and operating system patches from a single console for both Unix and Windows environments. It is completely integrated with Unix Inventory Solution for more efficient software management.

For example, IT managers can create client collections based on information gathered by Unix Inventory Solution to more effectively push the right software or upgrades to the appropriate clients without leaving their desk.

The new Unix SW Delivery Solution also includes a Web-based notification help desk that allows distributed workers and managers to track software delivery issues and to share critical information as well as expert knowledge on how to resolve the issue. This also reduces the time and cost of deploying software in distributed environments.

Both products include native integration with Microsoft SMS (1) (Storage Management System) Software used to routinely back up and archive files. See HSM.
