Altima Communications Inc., a leader in silicon solutions for high-speed networking and Internet infrastructure applications, today announced the newest members of the ProwlerSwitch(TM) Series, affording stacking capability for 8 + 1, 12 +1, 16 + 2, 24 + 2, 32+2 or 48 + 2 configurations and a gigabit uplink with flow control.

The Prowler8 provides eight integrated 10/100BaseTX/FX PHYs for high-volume desktop and SOHO switch applications, while the Prowler8M adds advanced Layer 2+ management capability. Joining the previously introduced Prowler12M, the Prowler12 offers an unmanaged 12+1 stackable switch solution with integrated PHYs. The series continues to exceed the demanding price-performance requirements of leading desktop OEMs while offering a seamless migration path to Layer-N, available via a pin-compatible upgrade and flash software download.

switching market reached over $7.5 billion in 1999, with Layer 2 switching to the desktop accounting for $1.5 Billion in revenue," said IdaRose Sylvester, Senior Industry Analyst at Dataquest/Gartner Group. "Key success factors in the Fast Ethernet switch market include low-power, highly integrated and cost-effective stacking capability; companies that can supply these features will be well-suited to play in today's market, and are positioning themselves to play in the more complex Layer 3 and beyond market of tomorrow."

The Prowler12 integrates twelve 10/100BaseTX/FX transceivers, while the Prowler8 integrates eight 10/100 transceivers; the Prowler8M adds advanced Layer2+ management features to the Prowler8, including port mirroring, port trunking, port-based VLAN See virtual LAN.

, Spanning Tree and SNMP/RMON support to ensure overall performance, security and management. Multiple devices can be connected together using Altima's patent pending stacking features. The 6.4 Gbps wire-speed expansion bus and the gigabit up link ports can be used to create 16 + 2, 24 + 2, 32+2 and 48 + 2 high-density stacking solutions, making any ProwlerSwitch(TM) device an ideal choice for the mainstream workgroup and SOHO switch markets.

"By extending the breadth of our mainstream desktop switch solutions, we can address the various configurations and management needs of our customers today and in the future," said Steve Kubes, vice-president of marketing and sales for Altima. "With this ProwlerSwitch(TM) Series, Altima has continued to drive the price-performance curves while creating a `one-stop-shop' for integrated switches, Dual Speed Repeaters and PHY See physical layer and physical.  solutions. No other company in the industry has this compliment of products."

ProwlerSwitch Series Features

Altima's ProwlerSwitch Series, developed with a 6.6 Mpps switch fabric and integrated PHYs, lends itself to providing both managed and unmanaged intelligent solutions. Full wire-speed capability is made available through the company's Hybrid Shared Memory Architecture In computer architecture, Shared Memory Architecture (SMA) refers to a design where the graphics chip does not have its own dedicated memory, and instead shares the main system RAM with the CPU and other components. (TM), ensuring true quality of service while sustaining overall network performance.

All ProwlerSwitch solutions provide a Gigabit uplink that supports GMII GMII Gigabit Media Independent Interface  and TBI TBI 1. Thyroxine-binding index 2. Total body irradiation  interfaces and include a fully compliant IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, New York, www.ieee.org) A membership organization that includes engineers, scientists and students in electronics and allied fields.  802.3 Media Access Controller (MAC) per port. Offering both half and full-duplex flow control, the MAC provides a means for discerning and managing network congestion In data networking and queueing theory, network congestion occurs when a link or node is carrying so much data that its quality of service deteriorates. Typical effects include queueing delay, packet loss or the blocking of new connections. .

Voice-ready architectural features of the ProwlerSwitch series include:
-- An address management engine that supports up to 16K Unicast MAC addresses,
meeting the needs of even large corporate network environments

-- Built-in Quality of Service (QoS) for wire-speed prioritization of packets

-- 64K transmit queue capability

-- Four level priority queues with extensive packet queues for true QoS

-- Up to 8 MB of packet buffer to ensure maximum network performance

This family, which includes the recently introduced Prowler12M, consists of 2.5v devices manufactured using 0.25(mu) CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) Pronounced "c-moss." The most widely used integrated circuit design. It is found in almost every electronic product from handheld devices to mainframes.  process technology, and offer typical power of less than 4watts each. Power, real estate and cost reductions are a benefit of Altima's Advanced Mixed-Signal Core Architecture(TM), which performs pre-conditioning in the analog domain The world of analog. When something is done in the analog domain, it implies the manipulation of electronic waveforms. Contrast with digital domain.  to minimize the use of high frequency and high-power DSP (1) (Digital Signal Processor) A special-purpose CPU used for digital signal processing applications (see definition #2 below). Pricing and Availability

Each packaged in a 456 PBGA PBGA Plastic Ball Grid Array , the devices will be sampling to development partners in Q2, 2000, with production release scheduled for Q3, 2000. Volume pricing is set at $38 for the Prowler8, $44 for the Prowler8M, $43 for the Prowler12 and $50 for the Prowler12M all in quantities of 50K.
