Alternative Supplies to Combat Water Crisis

This is a short writeup on water situation and how through consorted effort we can overcome water shortage.

Water is precious commodity and an element that governs the survivability of our life. It is irony that though we are surrounded with water mass or bodies still we face an acute water shortage. It has so many uses that the unavailability of it can lead to quarrel, argument, conflicts, disputes or pandemic. The importance of water is central to our living and the usage of water is multitude. If we plod back into history, we would be startled to know that we fought so many wars over this insignificant yet an extremely critical element, that decides our survivability. Today the impact of water crisis would be far more reaching because of our irresponsible behavior. The problem further proliferates when the 3rd world countries and countries suffering from poverty and hunger are at the perils of water shortage. With limited resources these countries are unable to fulfill their basic requirements and faced with the water shortage their problems are further added up. Not only the countries which are further dislocated geographically and bear an unfavorable climatic condition, are part of the water crisis bandwagon. The pace at which the population is growing can further propel the water crisis, a concern that needs to be addressed with utmost consciousness. As per the UN World Development Report 11 and the recently concluded 5th World Water Forum, the demand for water is going to rise steeply due to the growth in the population. World's population is growing at the rate 80 million people annually and with the current estimate of 6.6 million people worldwide, the demand for freshwater is going to increase by 64 billion cubic meters a year. There are insufficient water bodies especially the fresh water bodies to meet the growing demand. Before there is a mass hysteria relating to water shortage, it is important that government plays a role in ushering water governance and management. The question is how can government encourage different society stakeholders to join hands in solving water crisis? Interesting government should make water related products/equipments more readily accessible to the consumer group. As consumers know the means of water management they will try to optimize their water consumption pattern and consciously keep a tap on their water requirements. I have always wondered that when we have agricultural cultivation, meat & poultry cultivation then why cannot we do water cultivation? The point that I want to make here is that since the demand for water has grown significantly likewise the water has to meet the growing demand, which means one needs to have newer fresh water reserves or alternative water supplies.
