"It also is a clear signal that integration and reuse of Intellectual Property (IP) is a global issue that is seen as the future of the electronics industry."

Diversity of Viewpoints

Altera Corporation is a leading supplier of programmable logic devices and associated computer aided engineering (application) Computer Aided Engineering - (CAE) Use of computers to help with all phases of engineering design work. Like computer aided design, but also involving the conceptual and analytical design steps.  (CAE (1) (Computer-Aided Engineering) Software that analyzes designs which have been created in the computer or that have been created elsewhere and entered into the computer. ) logic development tools. Programmable logic devices are semiconductor chips that offer on-site programmability to customers. This flexibility can enable rapid testing of virtual components interface standards as they are developed.

Altera's SWG representative is Robert K. Beachler, director of development tools marketing. "Programmable logic is a driving force in the adoption of IP," stated Beachler. "The creation and adoption of VSIA standards can enable the use of IP by a large number of companies, just as programmable logic brought custom logic design to a large number of engineers."

Nokia is one of the world's leading manufacturers of wireless communication products such as cellular phones, base stations and digital exchanges. These systems take advantage of the small size and complex functionality of system-chips. Nokia's SWG representative is Erkki Tiittanen, senior engineering manager, IC technology worldwide.

"System houses such as Nokia can dramatically reduce time-to-market of new products by adopting standard system-chip interfaces and using external IP components," stated Tiittanen. "Nokia wants to actively contribute to developing VSIA standards and methods to meet the needs of system houses."

Nortel offers one of the broadest choices of network solutions in the industry and works closely with customers on a worldwide basis to design, build and integrate digital networks for information, entertainment, education and business. Nortel's SWG representative is Terry Thomas, managing director, strategic alliances and design systems.

"More and more of our solutions integrate technical expertise and components from a number of suppliers," stated Thomas. "The VSIA will facilitate this integration allowing Nortel to meet time-to-market challenges."

Other SWG member companies are: Advanced RISC Machines, Alcatel Mietec, Cadence Design Systems (company) Cadence Design Systems - A company that sells electronic design automation software and services.
