Network Management Experience Critical to Extending Open Language for Network Device Vulnerabilities

AUSTIN, Texas -- AlterPoint, Inc., a leading provider of network governance software, today announced that chief technology officer Roger Castillo has been appointed to the Open Vulnerability and Assessment Language Open Vulnerability and Assessment Language (OVAL) is an international, information security, community standard to promote open and publicly available security content, and to standardize the transfer of this information across the entire spectrum of security tools and  (OVAL[TM]) board. OVAL improves the detection of IT security issues through the development of a common and structured language for defining vulnerabilities, configuration issues, programs and/or patches.

"When it comes to information security, network devices are just as critical to protect as the server or desktop infrastructure," said Andrew Buttner, Senior INFOSEC Engineer at MITRE working as the OVAL Moderator moderator - A person, or small group of people, who manages a moderated mailing list or Usenet newsgroup. Moderators are responsible for determining which email submissions are passed on to the list or newsgroup. . "The OVAL Community is thrilled that Roger has accepted a board-level position to offer his established knowledge and his company's commitment to open standards Specifications for hardware and software that are developed by a standards organization or a consortium involved in supporting a standard. Available to the public for developing compliant products, open standards imply "open systems;" that an existing component in a system can be replaced ."

Joining OVAL board colleagues from industry leaders including Cisco, IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries) , Microsoft and Symantec, Roger's advisory role includes guiding the strategic direction and growth of the OVAL standard to promote open and publicly available security content, with specific focus on defining OVAL for network device vulnerabilities. In addition, AlterPoint intends to contribute historical vulnerability content to seed OVAL's network device repository.

"Rapid and effective network vulnerability management is a key requirement for our customers and the network governance market at large, but a lack of standards has been an obstacle to progress," stated AlterPoint's Roger Castillo. "The OVAL Community is leading the security market to common, open standards and I'm honored to contribute my efforts to the board."
