Altec Lansing Technologies Announces Market's First USB Computer Speaker System; First Universal Serial Bus Audio Peripheral Streams Computer Audio Data.


MILFORD, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 9, 1996--Altec Lansing Technologies today announced the computer industry's first Universal Serial Bus See USB.

) audio system, designed to reproduce computer audio signals via a new advanced technology linkage.

As a result, people will be able to use a single USB connector to seamlessly integrate audio data into computer-delivered entertainment, education and presentation programs.

USB was designed to eliminate computer cable clutter and be completely "Plug and Play," which means that devices will be correctly detected and configured automatically as soon as they are attached. The USB standard provides for streaming real-time audio and control data. Current industry forecasts predict that over 55 million computers will be sold in 1997 which include USB ports A USB socket on a computer or peripheral device into which a USB cable is plugged. See USB.  and that virtually all major computer manufacturers will include USB in their product designs. As a result, digital audio will be integral to the implementation of USB in the computer environment.

This announcement is the first result of Altec Lansing's new strategy to develop a series of peripheral systems designed to provide audio solutions for emerging technologies, such as USB. The company's first such new product is the model USB46, a three-piece computer speaker system. The USB46 will ship later this year, with a street price of $149.00.

This announcement is the result of a new initiative, which includes a product that conforms to existing and future Microsoft and Intel industry standards and specifications. As a result of Altec Lansing's alliances with these and other industry leaders, the company expects to make a number of additional technology and product announcements this fall.

"This first USB Audio system enables us to work more closely with other computer industry leaders to help shape the implementation of advanced digital audio," Anchel concluded.

The USB46 represents a new level of computer audio interface through a Universal Serial Bus connector. The product includes two satellite speakers, a subwoofer A speaker that reproduces the lower end of the audio spectrum. A subwoofer system may include a crossover circuit which switches frequencies at approximately 100Hz and under to the subwoofer, while passing the rest of the signal to the main speakers.  and user interface software, featuring an On Screen Display. Future Altec Lansing USB models will feature technology enabling easy retrieval of up to five audio channels of Dolby Digital A digital audio encoding system from Dolby used in movie and home theaters. First used in 1995, Dolby Digital employs Dolby's AC-3 (Audio Coding-3) coding and compression technology and is the standard for DVD-Video and HDTV.

Other product features of the Altec Lansing USB46 include a smart automatic power saving function and a USB electronic volume control. The system features two compact 6-watt per channel satellite speakers, which will occupy small spaces beside any USB-equipped desktop computer, while a powerful 20-watt subwoofer extends the low frequency response and adds deep bass sound. The system includes two 3-inch shielded full-range drivers and one 4-inch long throw subwoofer and features a frequency response of 42 Hz-20 kHz.
