Altana Chemie signs agreement to acquire Eckart.


Altana Chemie AG, Wesel, Germany, has signed an agreement to acquire Eckart GmbH & Co., which is headquartered in Germany. Altana Chemie is the Specialty Chemicals A Specialty chemical is a chemical produced for a specialized use. They are produced in lower volume than bulk chemicals, of which petrochemicals, made from oil feedstocks, are the most common. However, both are produced in a chemical plant.  division of Altana AG. The acquisition agreement includes Eckart's entire worldwide business of metallic effect pigments for applications in paints and printing inks, plastics, and cosmetics, as well as technical applications.

In addition to the acquisition of Eckart's products and technology, Altana Chemie will also get access to new customer segments and markets, especially in the cosmetics and the building and construction industries. Following regulatory approval, the full integration of Eckart is expected to take place in the fourth quarter of 2005.

Eckart will be maintained as an established brand and will become the fourth business unit of Altana. All existing Eckart product fields, sites, and employees will be retained by Altana. Altana will now have eight new production sites and its employee count will be "significantly over" 4,000.
