Instant messaging is more interactive than e-mail because messages are sent immediately, whereas e-mail messages can be queued up in a mail server for seconds or  service that is designed to be compatible with AOL and MSN instant messenger AOL's instant messaging service. Based on Tribal Voice's PowWow technology, "AltaVista Messenger" is leading a new class of real-time communication clients that combine an open, interoperable instant messaging capability with a full-set of communications and community building features. The AltaVista Messenger beta will be released this winter.

AltaVista Messenger is an interoperable client that allows Internet users to exchange messages in real-time without the use of an email inbox. AltaVista users will be able to communicate with each other and with users of a new version of Tribal Voice's PowWow that also powers Freeserve's Communicator and AT&T WorldNet IM Here service. These new services are compatible with America Online's Instant Messenger (AIM) and Microsoft's MSN Messenger Microsoft's instant messaging (IM) service, which provides text messaging and voice calling. Part of the MSN Network, MSN Messenger clients are available for non-XP versions of Windows, Mac, Pocket PC and MSN TV. For Windows XP, the IM client is Windows Messenger.  Service, collectively representing over 40 million users worldwide.

The availability of these new messaging clients will significantly advance the spread of open, interoperable and Web-wide communications on the Internet. And the integration of powerful community and communications features, such as universal buddy lists and simultaneous, real-time text and voice chat, will result in the most useful and feature-rich offering in the marketplace.

AltaVista Messenger will offer unequalled features, including:

-- Interoperable instant text messaging Sending short messages to a smartphone, pager, PDA or other handheld device. Text messaging implies sending short messages generally no more than a couple of hundred characters in length.  

-- Instant voice messaging Using voice mail as an alternative to electronic mail, in which voice messages are intentionally recorded, not because the recipient was not available.  

-- Buddy List consolidator that displays all users who are online,

across multiple systems

-- Web cruise option that allows users to guide the browser of the

person with whom they are communicating

-- File exchange

The new service will sit open on a user's desktop with buddy list icons that change color to indicate when users are present or not. Users can create their own user profiles, which can be viewed and amended as desired, and form lists of friends, buddies and work colleagues. AltaVista users will also have the option to launch a Web browser The program that serves as your front end to the Web on the Internet. In order to view a site, you type its address (URL) into the browser's Location field; for example, www.computerlanguage.com, and the home page of that site is downloaded to you.  directly from the client to access the legendary AltaVista Search comprising the most comprehensive Web index with more than 250 million pages or to access other personally-relevant information from AltaVista or the Web.
