Alps Electric introduces the GlidePoint Wave Keyboard; combines a gently curved design with Alps' advanced GlidePoint technology.

SAN JOSE San Jose, city, United States
San Jose (sănəzā`, săn hōzā`), city (1990 pop. 782,248), seat of Santa Clara co., W central Calif.; founded 1777, inc. 1850.
, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 21, 1996--Alps Electric (USA) Inc., a leading manufacturer of PC and Macintosh computer peripherals, today introduced the Alps GlidePoint Wave Keyboard, a naturally comfortable keyboard with an integrated Alps GlidePoint touchpad A stationary pointing device that provides a small, flat surface that you slide your finger over using the same movements as you would a mouse. You can tap on the pad's surface as an alternate to pressing one of the touchpad keys. See mouse, trackball and pointing stick. .

The Alps GlidePoint Wave Keyboard features a built-in adjustable wrist rest A platform used to raise the wrist above keyboard level for typing. The correct height for a wrist rest is several inches higher than the keyboard (even though almost none of them are). The arms and wrist should be level, and the fingers should be pointing down towards the keyboard. , Windows 95 keys, a special mouse key, and a spill-resistant membrane keyswitch technology. It comes with everything the user needs to get up and running, including an enhanced driver for DOS, Windows 3.1, and Windows 95.

The Alps GlidePoint Wave Keyboard features a 109-key layout, and a gently curved, centrally split design that accommodates the natural angle of the user's arms and hands. A fully integrated, tapered wrist rest adds extra comfort and support when not typing.

The spill-resistant membrane keyswitch technology delivers a firm, tactile feel for easy touch typing Typing on a keyboard without looking at the keys. Touch typing has become an essential skill these days no matter what line of work anyone does. The Alps GlidePoint Wave Keyboard has three Windows 95 keys for easy navigation through Windows 95 and instant command over applications -- two Windows keys that bring up the Start Menu, and a third application key that acts like the right mouse button, which in many applications brings up an options menu.

The easy-to-reach keys make application control fast and efficient with just the touch of a finger. Users no longer need to use a mouse or memorize keyboard commands Using the keyboard to navigate menus and buttons and select options. The Alps GlidePoint touchpad is a truly intuitive pointing device An input device used to move the pointer (cursor) on screen. The major pointing device is the mouse for the desktop computer and the touchpad for the laptop, although many road warriors bring along a mouse.  for controlling a cursor. Simply gliding a finger across the GlidePoint surface moves the cursor on the screen. Ease of use, and a sleek, compact design, make GlidePoint the perfect replacement for a mouse or trackball A stationary pointing device that contains a movable ball rotated with the fingers or palm. From one to three keys are located in various positions depending on the unit. Years ago, Kensington Microware popularized the trackball with its Turbo Mouse for the Macintosh. .

With an innovative feature called "taps," selecting text and objects with Alps GlidePoint is also intuitive -- simply tapping a finger lightly on the GlidePoint surface is just like clicking a mouse. If users would rather click than tap, Alps GlidePoint has two programmable buttons, which can be programmed for specific functions.

Alps GlidePoint features 400 dpi resolution. For the best performance, however, Alps provides a driver optimized for GlidePoint that allows the user to change the acceleration curve, choose between various cursor sizes, or select "hot spots hot spots

" for instant cursor positioning.

GlidePoint's design also makes it exceptionally reliable. With solid state construction and almost no moving parts (only the buttons), there is very little wear, and contamination from dirt is virtually eliminated.

"The GlidePoint Wave Keyboard is a perfect addition to the Alps line of GlidePoint products," said Lance Ohara, product manager for Alps. "It not only offers the most innovative pointing device for intuitive cursor control, but its gently curved wave design allows for efficient, comfortable typing."

The Alps GlidePoint Wave Keyboard is DOS, Windows 3.1 and Windows 95 compatible, and will work with standard Windows NT and OS/2 drivers. The keyboard plugs directly into the PS/2 (round) mouse port, and 6-pin (mini-DIN) keyboard port of any PC computer (serial port and 5-pin keyboard port adapters are also included).

The keyboard also comes with enhanced Windows control panel software for customized programming of the GlidePoint buttons.
