This announcement, L&H's most recent agreement with a developer of automotive applications, furthers the company's position as a leading vendor of voice recognition technology in the burgeoning automotive electronics market. Bill Meisel, industry expert and publisher of Speech Recognition Update, estimates the worldwide demand for speech technology in automotive applications can yield more than $200 million in licensing revenue by the year 2000.

The Alpine Navigation System A GPS-based electronic system in a car or truck that provides a real time map of the vehicle's current location as well as step-by-step directions to a programmed destination. See GPS and vehicle tracking. , which is scheduled to be available in the beginning of 1999, is an automotive navigation system An automotive navigation system is a satellite navigation system designed for use in automobiles. It typically uses GPS to acquire position data to locate the user on a road in the unit's map database.  designed to enable end users to control the system through spoken commands. L&H's ASR technology, supporting speaker independent vocabularies which eliminates data collection or training by the end user, will allow the Alpine Navigation System to recognize the request. The system will then provide feedback to the driver using L&H's multilingual text-to-speech technology. The navigation systems is planned to be available in a number of languages including: English, German and French. The system will also employ a far-talk microphone, eliminating the need for users to wear a headset microphone.

"L&H is the only speech technology vendor that has ASR and TTS available on the same processor in multiple languages," said Akira Kurihara, Managing Director of Alpine. "The engine's phonetic pho·net·ic

NEC's processor is a popular choice for developers creating consumer electronics applications such as personal digital assistants (PDAs), and navigation systems. The NEC V831, with the ASR1600 engine and L&H's text-to-speech technology, will be used by Alpine in this new product.

"The automotive electronics industry is an important market for L&H's core technologies," said Gerald Calabrese. "This agreement strengthens our presence in this key area while maximizing consumer safety and convenience with the Alpine Navigation System."
