Alpha Chi Upsilon.


April Blair decided she wanted to rush a particular sorority sorority: see fraternity.  at the University of Memphis The University of Memphis is a public research university located in Memphis, Tennessee, United States, and is a flagship public research university of the Tennessee Board of Regents system.  back in 2000. But when she queried fellow students if that sorority would accept an openly lesbian member, the consensus was "never."

Hurt but not defeated, Blair first joined a sorority that was more accepting of lesbians, but last summer she formed a new sorority for lesbian and bisexual bisexual /bi·sex·u·al/ (-sek´shoo-al)

. "I wanted to have something for lesbians because a lot of regular sororities don't accept them," Blair says.

Now Alpha Chi has chapters in two states. Pledges can rush online, but after initiation they visit Memphis for a weekend to learn how to form their own chapters. Alpha Chi holds monthly women's social mixers to discuss issues such as discrimination and sex. The members also mentor younger women coming out.

"My goal is to show that lesbians are not just one way," the 23-year-old Blair says. "We come in every shape, size, and color."
