Along with Rocky and the Liberty Bell, Philadelphia is famous for
cheesesteaks--fried steak, sliced or chopped, garnished with cheese and
fried onions, served in a long roll. Mr. Joseph Vento runs one of the
best-known cheesesteak restaurants in the city, and he is fed up with
customers who can't speak English. He has accordingly posted signs
around his establishment saying, "This is America: When ordering
speak English." Mr. Vento's Sicilian grandparents struggled to
learn English, and so should current immigrants, says he. It's a
noble and patriotic effort, but we can already hear the ACLU and Office
of Civil Rights lawyering up. Best go to Philly and get your cheesesteak
and freedom fries while Mr. Vento is still at large.
