Along came a spider...MOST people run away from spiders - but when photographer Richard Pattison saw this hairy creature he decided to get up close and personal. And it's just as well he did as the image he captured has been selected as a finalist for the BBC BBC in full British Broadcasting Corp. Publicly financed broadcasting system in Britain. The 36-year-old had just got a new macro lens n. 1. a camera lens designed to focus at short distances so as to achieve photographic magnifications of objects larger than with standard lenses. for his camera which allows him to get really close to small subjects. He was looking for some flowers to test it out on when he noticed the spider climbing up the wall of his home in Roseworth, Stockton. Richard was not even going to enter the Countryfile competition but when his colleagues at Newtown Community Resource Centre saw the picture of the spider they persuaded him to send it off. "It was only taken a few days before the closing date and only just made it in time for judging," he said. "It's excellent to be selected as a finalist. I would have been happy if they had just talked about it on the television but judge Chris Packham said it was one of his favourite pictures. "I would usually run away from spiders but this one was only small." The photograph appeared on Countryfile last month as one of 12 finalists which will all feature in a Countryfile calendar. The final 12 have now gone to the public vote and the winning entry will be exhibited at the Linnean Society of London The Linnean Society of London is the world's premier society for the study and dissemination of taxonomy. It publishes a Zoological Journal, as well as Botanical and Biological Journals. . The overall winner will be announced on Sunday along with the judges' favourite.
