Almost retired.

Thirty-five years is enough," said Francis Millard, who will step down as director and principal at Charles H. McCann Technical School in North Adams, MA, in June. Serving 19 years in the classroom--the last 16 as director and principal--Millard has done amazing things.

He created the curriculum at McCann, which, in turn, produced major improvements in standardized test scores. And, when the Northern Berkshire Regional Vocational District superintendent was deployed as a U.S. military reservist in Iraq last year, Millard stepped up and filled that vital role as well.

"I never had to worry about the school district," said Superintendent James Brosnan." (Mr. Millard) did it flawlessly and marvelously. He's a great motivator and maintains exceptionally high degrees of integrity and honesty."

Does that sound like someone who'd make a great coach? You bet. Although Millard, 57, is giving up his director and principal positions, he's got one role he doesn't want to give up: Head Football Coach.

"I enjoy it very much," Millard said of the position he has held off an on since 1968. "It's not a job, it's more like a hobby."

Motivating and guiding people, however, is just part of the story. Those who work by his side say Millard's integrity and honesty are exceptional. His legendary dedication to McCann's students is bolstered by his attendance at virtually all of the school's activities, including sporting events. And his legacy of always trying to improve the school will endure.

Whether or not Millard coaches football this fall, one thing is certain. His surname will remain a permanent fixture at McCann H.S. Francis' wife, Kathy, is a physical education and health teacher at the school.
