Alltel to offer location Caller ID

Alltel Corp. announced Tuesday the launch of an enhanced caller ID function that will give city and state information for the person who is calling.

Alltel, which will sell the service for $1.99 per month, is initially making the service available on one phone, the LG AX275. The company says the service, called City ID, will be expanded to other phones later.

The function will match the incoming number with the location of where the phone is registered, Alltel said. The application can identify more than 15,000 cities, towns and neighborhoods.

"Customers frequently do not recognize an incoming phone number, and this application will provide the additional information to help users decide if they want to answer the call," Alltel senior vice president of wireless products Wade McGill said.

Little Rock, Ark.-based Alltel has 12 million customers spread over the West, Midwest and Southeast.
