Alltel Declares Quarterly Dividends of 12 1/2 Cents Per Share and an Additional One-Time Dividend Payment of 4.8 Cents Per Share.


LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Alltel's (NYSE NYSE

: AT) board of directors today declared regular quarterly dividends on the company's common stock. The 12 1/2 cent dividend is payable Oct. 3, 2006, to stockholders of record as of Sept. 8, 2006.

Regular quarterly dividends also were declared on all series of the company's preferred stock Stock shares that have preferential rights to dividends or to amounts distributable on liquidation, or to both, ahead of common shareholders.

Preferred stock is given preference over common stock. Holders of preferred stock receive dividends at a fixed annual rate.
. Preferred dividends preferred dividend n. a payment of a corporation's profits to holders of preferred shares of stock. (See: preferred stock)  are payable Sept. 15, 2006, to stockholders of record as of Aug. 25, 2006.

As a result of the anticipated pro-rata initial dividend to be declared by Windstream Corp., the new company created by the spinoff Spinoff

A new, independent company created through selling or distributing new shares for an existing part of another company.

Spinoffs may be done through a rights offering.

 Communications, an additional one-time dividend of 4.8 cents also was declared on the company's common stock in order to maintain the aggregate annual pre-wireline separation dividend rate. The 4.8 cent dividend is payable Oct. 3, 2006, to stockholders of record as of Sept. 8, 2006
