AlliedSignal raises performance and lowers costs with mainframe solution.

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 8, 1995--AlliedSignal Inc. of Morristown, N.J., manufacturer for the engineered materials, automotive and aerospace industries, upgraded its Amdahl mainframe to a 5995-12670M 12-way system to meet the information processing demands created by growing business needs.

The new Amdahl processor is used to run the manufacturing giant's mission-critical systems, which are linked to AlliedSignal's network of business units around the world. All shipping, receiving, MRP, accounting, sales, and management information systems run on the Amdahl 12-way processor.

Located in Tempe-Ariz., the Computing Technology Center (CTC)--part of AlliedSignal Business Services--has the task of meeting the constantly increasing demands for information processing services while simultaneously reducing the cost of those services for the company's business units.

The CTC, established in 1992, consolidated the IT centers previously located at the company's various business units. In each of the three years since it was set up, the CTC has seen productivity increase by an average of 12.8 percent, while it has reduced the cost per performance measurement unit by 8.4 percent each year.

"It is continually obvious to us that larger machines give better economies of scale," commented Jim Best, vice president of AlliedSignal's Computing Technology Center. "Bigger mainframes like the 12-way are less expensive per unit of service, have smaller footprints and have lower power consumption than a combination of smaller machines."

The CTC acts like a utility into which the business units can plug their applications, according to Best. The new mainframe is divided into 10 domains, functioning as separate logical processors, using Amdahl's Multiple Domain Feature(TM) (MDF(TM)). This feature allows each business unit to use its own virtual machine to process its applications.

AlliedSignal received 22 bids for upgrading its system to handle increased demand. According to Best, less than 5 percent separated the 22 bids, but the deciding factors were the reduced software licensing costs, reduced energy requirements, reduced footprint and proven service capabilities that came with the Amdahl machine.
