, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 24, 1996-- AlliedSignal today formally opened a plant in Shanghai, China's Pudong area to manufacture amorphous metal An amorphous metal is a metallic material with a disordered atomic-scale structure. In contrast to most metals, which are crystalline and therefore have a highly ordered arrangement of atoms, amorphous alloys are non-crystalline.  cores for utility and industrial transformers that have the potential to significantly reduce China's energy consumption.

Jeff Lilley, AlliedSignal Amorphous Metals' Regional Director - Asia, amorphous metal can reduce the energy lost from transformer cores by 75% compared with the most efficient type transformers used in China today.

"Widespread use of amorphous transformers in China can mean a substantial reduction in coal consumption, a reduced need for new electricity generating capacity, and lower emissions of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide carbon dioxide, chemical compound, CO2, a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas that is about one and one-half times as dense as air under ordinary conditions of temperature and pressure.  and sulfur dioxide sulfur dioxide, chemical compound, SO2, a colorless gas with a pungent, suffocating odor. It is readily soluble in cold water, sparingly soluble in hot water, and soluble in alcohol, acetic acid, and sulfuric acid.  that produce global warming global warming, the gradual increase of the temperature of the earth's lower atmosphere as a result of the increase in greenhouse gases since the Industrial Revolution. ," Lilley said.

The plant, in Pudong's Zhangjiang High Tech Park, currently employs about 20 people and has the capacity to produce 450 tons of amorphous metal cores annually. AlliedSignal is in the process of tripling that capacity. The plant, which began production in July, is AlliedSignal's second high tech venture in Pudong, the other being a turbocharger tur·bo·charg·er

"Our new plant is another indication of AlliedSignal's long-term commitment to the Chinese market," AlliedSignal Chairman - Greater China Paul Wong said. "The plant enables us to better serve our customers in China with faster delivery, lower costs and greater technical support. In addition, it provides an export base for other Asian customers."

AlliedSignal produces amorphous metal alloy in the United States at plants in Parsippany, N.J. and Conway, S.C. The Pudong plant will import amorphous alloy from Conway to produce transformer cores for its customers.

With more than 700 patents, AlliedSignal Amorphous Metals is the world's technological leader in the production of this specialty metal. Amorphous metals have unique magnetic and electric properties that improve the energy efficiency of electrical transformers for residential, commercial and industrial applications. They also are used in anti-theft tags for clothing and other consumer goods consumer goods
