AlliedSignal armor materials take aim at new 'Urban Threat'.

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 28, 1997--

Police in Nation's Capital adopt Superior SpectraFlex(TM)-GoldFlex(TM) system

AlliedSignal Inc. said today that a new system capable of defeating the faster and more penetrating rounds called the new "urban threat" to law enforcement uses its new SpectraFlex and GoldFlex composites.

system is distinct because it combines reasonable cost, high performance, and comfort for day-to-day use by police officers.

A body armor purchase announced today by Washington, D.C.'s police chief Larry D. Soulsby uses the new system - a combination of SpectraFlex and GoldFlex composites from the Spectra Performance Materials (SPM SPM - Sequential Parlog Machine ) business of AlliedSignal. Both are high-performance ballistic composites, developed to provide greater comfort and higher performance in body armor in use by law enforcement officials.

"Both of these composites have a high degree of stopping power stopping power Radiation oncology The ability of a material to stop ionizing radiation; alpha paticles are stopped by a piece of paper, gamma radiation by thick lead shielding Radiology The density of a tissue reflected in an image's whiteness; white ," said Andrew Bonham Bonham can refer to:

"It was recently discovered in product development that placing the two in combination with one another provides greater ballistic performance than the total benefits of the materials when each is used alone." In rankings of ballistic materials available for protective body armor, both SpectraFlex and GoldFlex rank among the highest and toughest.

One Plus One Equals Three

"It's like saying that one plus one equals three. Used together in the same vest, the fibers do a better job stopping bullets than a vest of either SpectraFlex or GoldFlex used alone. Together they're more effective in minimizing the deformation and therefore the potential for trauma caused by a stopped projectile projectile

"The result," Bonham said, "is a personal body armor system that's capable of defeating the hardened, faster rounds that have become the new 'urban threat' to police throughout the world."

Composite Armor System

Each composite was developed by AlliedSignal using the company's patented Shield Technology. Instead of weaving high-strength ballistic fibers into a fabric, the traditional method of making panels for body armor, Shield Technology lays fibers side by side in a bed of resin. The fibers are then fused into a soft, flexible fabric-like composite.

SpectraFlex is made of Spectra(R) Fiber - a polyethylene yarn also developed by AlliedSignal. It is the strongest and lightest manmade fiber, and a leading ingredient in armor since it was introduced in 1985.

GoldFlex is made from aramid fibers, another type of high-strength synthetic yarn, which has been used in police armor since the 1970s. GoldFlex was introduced to armor manufacturers last year, and it was only this year that systems combining the two were developed.

New Vests Provide More Comfort to Officers

The lighter, more flexible SpectraFlex and GoldFlex vests provide a much higher degree of comfort, considered essential to officers on patrol. The system packages multiple layers of each material in a ballistic panel that is contained in a fabric carrier that is highly concealable.

Certified as Level III-A by the Federal Government's National Institute of Justice, the body armor purchased by the Metropolitan Police Department exceeds standards for the highest level of soft, concealable body armor as specified by the National Institute of Justice's (NIJ Noun 1. "The Metropolitan Police Department is to be congratulated for going beyond tradition by adopting the high-comfort, high-performance armor system for their officers," said Bonham. The vests they have purchased from Point Blank Body Armor Inc. are just one of several SpectraFlex and GoldFlex systems from AlliedSignal being introduced to law-enforcement by armor manufacturers.
