, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 1, 1995-- AlliedSignal Inc. said today that it has reached an agreement in principle with the German state of Thuringia to purchase the assets operated by Polymer und Filament filament, in astronomy: see chromosphere.  Rudolstadt (PFR), a German producer of nylon plastics and fibers. The transaction is expected to be completed in July.

As part of the agreement, AlliedSignal will acquire PFR's manufacturing facilities in Rudolstadt, located 150 miles east of Frankfurt/Main, which is expected to employ approximately 300 people initially. Terms were not announced. AlliedSignal said it plans to invest approximately $140 million over the next three years to upgrade the facility to world-class quality standards, expand polymer capacity and build a Plastics Application Development Center.

"The acquisition of the PFR facility will enable AlliedSignal to meet the increasing needs of our European customers in the plastics and fibers markets," said Frederic M. Poses, president, AlliedSignal Engineered Materials. "The Rudolstadt site will serve as a springboard for our future European growth initiative."

A world leader in nylon technology, AlliedSignal is the world's largest producer of nylon 6 resin resin, any of a class of amorphous solids or semisolids. Resins are found in nature and are chiefly of vegetable origin. They are typically light yellow to dark brown in color; tasteless; odorless or faintly aromatic; translucent or transparent; brittle, fracturing  and is at the forefront of the development of innovative plastic resins and design solutions for use in the automotive, packaging, electrical and lawn and power industries. AlliedSignal Fibers operates the world's largest caprolactam Caprolactam is an organic compound which is a cyclic amide (or lactam).

The primary industrial use of caprolactam is as a monomer in the production of nylon. Most of the caprolactam is synthesised from cyclohexanoxime by a Beckmann rearrangement.

AlliedSignal also is the world technology leader in polyester fiber Noun 1. polyester fiber - a quick-drying resilient synthetic fiber consisting primarily of polyester
polyester - any of numerous synthetic resins; they are light and strong and weather resistant
 for tires.

The company currently operates five nylon and polyester fiber production facilities (Chesterfield County Chesterfield County is the name of several counties in the United States:

  • Chesterfield County, Virginia
, Vir.; Moncure, N.C.; Columbia, S.C.; Longlaville, France; and Emmen, The Netherlands) and three plastics plants (Chesterfield County, Vir.; Columbia, S.C.; and Sparta, Tenn.).

"This acquisition is an important part of our strategy to extend our plastics and fibers technology leadership," said Poses. "The facility will support our aggressive growth targets for both businesses."

Poses estimates the automotive (in growing applications such as air intake manifolds Noun 1. intake manifold - a manifold consisting of a pipe to carry fuel to each cylinder in an internal-combustion engine

, door handles and inner door systems) and packaging industries (meat and cheese packaging, where barrier and strength are critical) will continue to drive the growth of the global plastics market. Growth in the automotive and recreation products industries will be the primary drivers of increased fibers sales.

In 1994, global consumption of nylon in fibers and resin applications totaled roughly 10.5 billion pounds, with an estimated market value of $16.5 billion. 1994 worldwide use of nylon in plastics applications was approximately 2.5 billion pounds, with a total market value exceeding $3.7 billion.

AlliedSignal Plastics manufactures nylon resins used in packaging films, automotive parts, electrical wire and cable, electric components and lawn and power products. The company's Fibers business manufacturers a wide range of fibers, including nylon, polyester polyester, synthetic fiber, produced by the polymerization of the product formed when an alcohol and organic acid react. The outstanding characteristic of polyesters is their ability to resist wrinkling and to spring back into shape when creased.  and Spectra(R) fiber for use in carpet, activewear, tires, seat belts, airbags, armor and recreational products.
