Called HFC-245fa (hydrofluorocarbon (hardware) hydrofluorocarbon - (HFC) A suggested replacement for the chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) coolant gas used in chillers and air conditioners. ), the blowing agent can be used to make refrigerator and freezer insulation foam; boardstock foam used in construction (for roofing and sheathing); and spray foam, which is also used in construction. HFC-245fa also is suited for use in certain refrigerant re·frig·er·ant

 and solvent applications.

"We are pleased to be taking this important next step in the commercialization of HFC-245fa," said Guy Broadbent, Business Director, AlliedSignal Specialty Fluorines. "We have been working very closely with our global customers throughout the HFC-245fa development process. We know they are counting on using this product to meet significant regulations that have been enacted throughout the world as a result of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete de·plete

 the Ozone Layer."

The Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer is an international agreement to phase out the production of CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons chlorofluorocarbons (klōr'əflr`əkär'bənz, klôr'–) (CFCs), organic compounds that contain carbon, chlorine, and fluorine atoms. ) and other ozone-depleting compounds. The U.S. is one of more than 162 international signatories to the Montreal Protocol. Hydrofluorocarbons hydrofluorocarbons: see under chlorofluorocarbons. , or HFCs, do not contain chlorine and, as a result, do not contribute to ozone depletion.

HFC-245fa would replace HCFC-141b (hydrochlorofluorocarbon Noun 1. hydrochlorofluorocarbon - a fluorocarbon that is replacing chlorofluorocarbon as a refrigerant and propellant in aerosol cans; considered to be somewhat less destructive to the atmosphere
HCFC
), which contains chlorine and is widely used today to produce foam insulation used in refrigerators and freezers. The EPA has scheduled HCFC-141b for phaseout phase·out

on January 1, 2003, due to its potential to deplete the earth's stratospheric ozone layer.

AlliedSignal's HFC-245fa is non-flammable and offers customers worldwide a safe alternative to the use of other compounds, such as hydrocarbons, which present significant safety and other environmental challenges.

In addition to safety and environmental benefits, HFC-245fa offers users insulation performance matching that of HCFC-141b. The insulation performance of HFC-245fa is superior to other non-ozone-depleting products, such as hydrocarbons and HFC-134a, which is important in helping global customers meet increasingly stringent energy efficiency standards.

Prior to the commercial manufacture and sale of a new chemical substance, the EPA must approve the product under its Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP) Program, which determines acceptability of a particular substitute for a particular end use within a larger sector. AlliedSignal's SNAP petition to the EPA would allow HFC-245fa to be used in various foam, refrigerant and solvent applications.

"HFC-245fa will provide our global customers with solid technical performance and allow for the speedy transition away from ozone-depleting compounds," said Brian Strauss, Marketing Manager of Foam for AlliedSignal Specialty Fluorines. "We're excited about the prospects for the product. AlliedSignal has made a significant investment in HFC-245fa and we fully expect to commercialize the product in advance of the HCFC-141b phaseout."

AlliedSignal currently holds five U.S. and multiple foreign process patents on various aspects of the manufacture of HFC-245fa, with additional process patents expected in the near future. In 1994, AlliedSignal entered into an agreement with Bayer AG to license a number of patents that cover the use of several molecules in the manufacture of various types of foam, including HFC-245fa.

AlliedSignal implemented a development program for HFC-245fa in 1994, and the company is currently manufacturing HFC-254fa in its Fluorine fluorine (fl`ərēn, –rĭn), gaseous chemical element; symbol F; at. no. 9; at. wt. 18.998403; m.p. −219.6°C;; b.p. −188.14°C;; density 1.  Products Research Laboratory in Buffalo, New York. A decision on where to site a commercial manufacturing facility will be made later this year. The HFC-245fa is available to customers for testing purposes.

Specialty Fluorines is part of AlliedSignal's Specialty Chemicals business. AlliedSignal Specialty Chemicals is a world leader in the manufacture and supply of specialty and fine chemical products for a diverse range of applications.
