Northwest will continue to operate AlliedSignal's 36-300 APUs on its existing fleet of A320 aircraft. The [A] model 131-9 APU is the third version of this successful series developed by AlliedSignal for new single aisle aircraft. The series incorporates new technologies and more than 50 design improvements to increase reliability, maintainability and performance. Approximately 170 of the 131-9 APUs are in-service on MD-90 and B737 aircraft and have accumulated more than 285,000 hours of operation on aircraft around the world. The APU will start and operate to 39,000 feet and provide pneumatic (155 lb./min.) and electrical power for the aircraft while in flight or on the ground. APUs are gas turbine engines designed to provide pneumatic and electrical power for an aircraft while in flight or on the ground.
