") Thursday announced a joint cooperation agreement to optimize the materials, processes, and equipment for spin-on deposition of Low-K dielectric materials Dielectric materials

Materials which are electrical insulators or in which an electric field can be sustained with a minimal dissipation of power. Dielectrics are employed as insulation for wires, cables, and electrical equipment, as polarizable media for
to be used in next generation semiconductor devices.

The broad agreement will include joint development of processes and equipment modules tailored for state-of-the-art Low-K materials.

As part of the alliance, AlliedSignal has purchased TEL's Low-K tool set, which includes an ACT 8 SOD coater, an Alpha-8SE Low-K annealing annealing (ənēl`ĭng), process in which glass, metals, and other materials are treated to render them less brittle and more workable.  system, and a Unity II etcher. These tools will be installed by early July 1999 in AlliedSignal's new, multi-million dollar Low-K Integration facility located in Sunnyvale.

This alliance joins two industry leaders in the development of Low-K technology. TEL is the world leader in furnaces, dielectric etch and spin-on equipment for semiconductors. AlliedSignal is the world leader in Low-K materials, with a broad product portfolio including both inorganic and organic polymeric materials. Both companies have a global customer base, which includes the most advanced semiconductor manufacturers.

"We are very excited to have TEL as a partner in the development of Low-K material processes and technology. This alliance complements AlliedSignal's strategy to better serve our global semiconductor customer base," said Jack Bolick, vice president and general manager of AlliedSignal's Wafer Fabrication Wafer Fabrication is a procedure composed of many repeated sequential processes to produce complete electrical or photonic circuits. Examples include production of radio frequency (RF) amplifiers, LEDs, optical computer components, and CPUs for computers.  Group.

"As Low-K dielectrics play a larger role in the most advanced semiconductor devices, our new facility will be able to show manufacturers the latest materials running on leading-edge production equipment."

The new facility will allow the two companies to jointly develop new processes and technology with a reduced cost-of-ownership. The agreement includes both 200 and 300mm process development.

"AlliedSignal has distinguished themselves in the development of multiple Low-K product platforms and has continued to define the leading edge in material development and manufacturing," said Alan Nolet, senior vice president and general manager of Tokyo Electron America.

"We are very pleased to enter a strategic cooperation agreement with AlliedSignal and believe that it will hasten the adoption of these materials, processes and tool sets worldwide as the preferred choice for our customers."

The AlliedSignal Low-K Integration facility is already being used for processing wafers, with the grand opening slated for July 8, 1999. According to according to

"Both material optimization, as well as equipment refinement will be investigated. Our goal is to streamline and accelerate our customers' in-fab development cycle by providing complete integration data."

About Low-K Dielectrics

Dielectric films are crucial elements in building smaller, faster, lighter and cheaper integrated circuits. As integrated circuits become more powerful, the distance between metal lines on the IC's have decreased to a point where electrical charges carried by the narrow wires can electrically interfere with each other. Dielectric layers act as insulators between metal lines in integrated circuits allowing metal lines to be placed closer together.

The lower the dielectric constant (k value), the better insulating properties the dielectric film possesses. Spin-on deposition is the leading technology used to apply Low-K materials in the semiconductor industry.
