Terms of the sale were not announced. The acquisition involves Cabot's potassium zirconium fluoride ("salt" or potassium hexafluorozirconate) and hydrofluorozirconic acid ("acid" or hexafluorozirconic acid) products which Cabot now produces at a Boyertown, Pennsylvania plant. AlliedSignal will shift production of these products to its AlliedSignal Specialty Chemicals' facility in Seelze, Germany, which manufactures and markets these and similar products worldwide under the Riedel-de Haen haen v. Scots Past participle of hae. brand name. "We are pleased to bring this additional business to Seelze," AlliedSignal Specialty Chemicals President Dr. David C. Hill said, noting that the acquisition establishes AlliedSignal as a leading global supplier. These chemicals, with unique physical and chemical properties, are used primarily in the aluminum industry. "Salts" typically are used as metal fluxing agents in aluminum/zirconium alloys, often for aircraft applications and as a flame retardant for wool. "Acids" are used for the pre-treatment of metals and for finishing applications, e.g. on surfaces of automotive panels and as a layer on aluminum and phosphated steel. The acquisition is consistent with AlliedSignal's growth strategy to be a leading, global, market-based specialty and fine chemicals business. AlliedSignal Specialty Chemicals' key markets include pharmaceutical and agricultural chemicals; polymer additives; industrial chemicals, and chemicals for the paint and coatings, sealants and adhesives, and electronic industries.
