to supply air turbine starters, wheels and brakes, and avionics equipment for up to 61 Boeing 777 aircraft in a contract valued at $250 million.

The contract is one of four that AlliedSignal has recently won and represents another success in the fast-growing Asia-Pacific region. In addition to Singapore, AlliedSignal received contracts from GE Capital Aviation Services, Malaysia Airlines and Construcciones Aeronauticas S.A.; the value of the four totals about $1.1 billion.

"Singapore Airlines is a highly regarded airline that is known for its attention to customers," said Daniel P. Burnham, AlliedSignal Aerospace president. "Their choice reflects a similar customer commitment at AlliedSignal."

AlliedSignal Aircraft Landing Systems will provide Bendix main and nose wheels as well as AlliedSignal s new carbon composite braking systems.

"The Bendix brakes for the 777 feature an advanced technology carbon composite Carbenix material developed by AlliedSignal specifically to meet the demands of aircraft such as the 777," said Carl Montalbine, vice president and general manager of Aircraft Landing Systems.

AlliedSignal Commercial Avionics Systems will furnish its new weather radar with forward-looking windshear detection, its new Quantum Line of communications A route, either land, water, and/or air, that connects an operating military force with a base of operations and along which supplies and military forces move. Also called LOC. It receives a microwave signal from earth (uplink), amplifies it and retransmits it back to earth at a different frequency (downlink). The forward-looking windshear detection system can provide advance warning of dangerous turbulence from windshear. The new Quantum Line systems offer voice and data communications data communications, application of telecommunications technology to the problem of transmitting data, especially to, from, or between computers. In popular usage, it is said that data communications make it possible for one computer to "talk" with another.  and are built to provide reliability beyond 30,000 hours.

Ground proximity warning systems sound an alert if the aircraft is in danger of flying into terrain. TCAS, combined with a Mode S transponder, warns the flight crew to climb or descend to avoid another aircraft.

Cockpit voice recorders preserve cockpit communications and flight data recorders collect aircraft performance data; both systems help investigators determine the causes of accidents. AlliedSignal s new solid state recorders can store up to two hours of data and can record more performance parameters than tape machines.

Trent 800 engines. "These state-of-the-art starters feature an innovative new clutch configuration that will improve reliability while significantly lowering costs," said David E. Berges, vice president and general manager of the Engines Systems and Accessories business of Aerospace Equipment Systems.

Singapore Airlines has given Boeing a firm order for 28 Boeing 777s and an option to buy an additional 33. In addition to the equipment chosen by Singapore Airlines, every 777 has 11 AlliedSignal systems provided as standard equipment, including the air supply and cabin pressure control systems, auxiliary power unit An auxiliary power unit (APU) is a device on a vehicle whose purpose is to provide energy for functions other than propulsion. Different types of APU are found on aircraft, as well as some large ground vehicles.  and emergency ram air turbine A ram air turbine (RAT) is a small propeller and connected hydraulic pump, or electrical generator used as an emergency power source for aircraft. In case of the loss of both primary and auxiliary power sources the RAT will power vital systems (flight controls, linked hydraulics .
