AlliedSignal Aerospace First to Receive FAA Approval for Two New ACAS II Systems; Systems Will Satisfy New Mandates in Europe and Other Regions.PHOENIX--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 29, 1999-- ACASS ACASS Architect-Engineer Contract Administration Support System ACASS Advanced Close Air Support System ACASS Alberta Congenital Anomalies Surveillance System ACASS Architect-Engineer Contract Appraisal Support System (Army contracting) II Systems Approved for Air Transport, Regional, and Business Aircraft AlliedSignal Inc. (NYSE NYSE See: New York Stock Exchange :ALD ALD abbr. adrenoleukodystrophy ALD, n.pr See adrenoleukodystrophy. See Carotid stenosis. II). The newly approved safety systems for air transport and general aviation aircraft satisfy the requirements of new mandates for airlines and air cargo carriers Air Cargo Carriers is a cargo airline based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. It was established in 1986 and operates feeder cargo services for major express carriers in Canada, the Caribbean and the USA. Air Cargo Carriers, Inc. in European countries and other nations. TSO approval authorizes the company to manufacture the product and clears the way for individual certifications in specific aircraft models. "The AlliedSignal Aerospace leadership in flight safety avionics began nearly 40 years ago, when our engineers developed the collision avoidance algorithm used in today's ACAS system," said Frank Daly, president, AlliedSignal Aerospace Avionics and Lighting. "We are pleased that AlliedSignal Aerospace is the first avionics company to certify ACAS II for both air transport and general aviation aircraft." Designed to meet European collision avoidance requirements, ACAS II is a derivative of the Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (1) See adaptive cruise control. (2) A passenger car system that detects objects on the road that the driver may not be able to see. Using radar or infrared sensors, distant objects, such as a deer crossing the road at night or in a fog, are projected onto the (TCAS TCAS Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System TCAS Traffic Collision Avoidance System TCAS T-Carrier Administration System TCAS Terminal Control Address Space (MVS/TSO) TCAS Technical Control and Analysis System II), which has been required for all aircraft carrying more than 30 passengers in U.S. airspace. The new ACAS II system incorporates enhanced software, which reduces nuisance alerts, and will decrease radio frequency congestion The condition of a network when there is not enough bandwidth to support the current traffic load. congestion - When the offered load of a data communication path exceeds the capacity. by reducing the number of transmissions while also providing pilots easier-to-understand voice messages and display symbols. This is accomplished by replacing current TCAS software level 6.04A with the new level 7.0, commonly called Change 7.0. Upgrade packages will be available from AlliedSignal Aerospace for current TCAS II systems in August. Two new ACAS II systems from AlliedSignal Aerospace are the CAS 81A system, designed primarily for full-size transport aircraft and large business jets, and the smaller CAS 67A, designed for regional aircraft and small- to mid-size business airplanes. In Europe, aircraft with more than 30 passenger seats of 15,000 Kg takeoff weight must have ACAS II installed and certified by Jan. 1, 2000 (or March 31, 2001 if they obtain a waiver). Additional nations mandating ACAS II include India, Argentina, Australia, Japan and Oman. The FAA has not indicated whether it will require Change 7.0 for operations in U.S. airspace. Business aircraft operators are not required to install collision avoidance equipment until the European mandate in 2005. However, many have done so voluntarily, and virtually all new business jets are delivered with the equipment in place.
