AlliedSignal Aerospace Brake for Boeing 717 Passes Rejected Takeoff Test.SOUTH BEND South Bend, city (1990 pop. 105,511), seat of St. Joseph co., N Ind., on the great south bend of the St. Joseph River, in a farming and mint-growing region; inc. as a city 1865. , Ind.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 15, 1999-- AlliedSignal Inc. (NYSE NYSE See: New York Stock Exchange :ALD ALD abbr. adrenoleukodystrophy ALD, n.pr See adrenoleukodystrophy. ALD aldolase. ) Thursday announced that its Bendix steel brake for the new Boeing 717-200 passenger jet exceeded all performance requirements during a rejected takeoff A rejected takeoff or RTO is the situation in which it is decided to abort the takeoff of an airplane. There can be many reasons for deciding to perform a rejected takeoff, but they are usually due to suspected or actual technical failures, like an engine failure such as a test. The test is considered the most difficult of all Boeing 717 brake certification tests. During the test, Boeing test pilots accelerated to approximately V(1) speed before applying the brakes, bringing the 121,000-pound airplane to a complete stop 300 feet less than the estimated stopping distance. The rejected takeoff test is conducted with brakes that are 90 percent worn, and simulates the most demanding braking scenario -- stopping a fully laden plane without the added benefit of the thrust reversers -- after it has reached takeoff speed. "Throughout the flight test program, the AlliedSignal Aerospace braking system has demonstrated better deceleration deceleration /de·cel·er·a·tion/ (de-sel?er-a´shun) decrease in rate or speed. early deceleration and shorter stopping distances than the predicted performance for the baseline airplane," said Carl Montalbine, vice president and general manager, AlliedSignal Aerospace Aircraft Landing Systems. "These performance improvements will translate into operational benefits for airline customers once the airplane is placed into service." The 717 brake system, jointly developed by Boeing, AlliedSignal Aerospace and Hydro-Aire, has been refined during the flight test program to increase brake life, improve stopping distance and significantly reduce brake vibration. The brake, which incorporates AlliedSignal Aerospace's industry-leading Cerametalix(R) friction technology, will be installed on all Boeing 717 aircraft. The 100-seat twinjet is scheduled for joint certification by the Federal Aviation Administration Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), component of the U.S. Department of Transportation that sets standards for the air-worthiness of all civilian aircraft, inspects and licenses them, and regulates civilian and military air traffic through its air traffic control and the Joint Aviation Authorities The Joint Aviation Authorities, or JAA, is an associated body of the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC) representing the civil aviation regulatory authorities of a number of European States who have agreed to co-operate in developing and implementing common safety later this summer, with the first delivery to AirTran Airways dues in September.
