AlliedSignal, 3M finalizing alliance to jointly market solvent products.

MORRISTOWN, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 25, 1995--AlliedSignal and 3M today announced that the two companies are finalizing an alliance to jointly market specialty solvents used as replacements for chlorofluorocarbons chlorofluorocarbons (klōr'əflr`əkär'bənz, klôr'–) (CFCs), organic compounds that contain carbon, chlorine, and fluorine atoms.  (CFCs) and other ozone depleting substances (ODS (Operational Data Store) A database designed for queries on transactional data. An ODS is often an interim or staging area for a data warehouse, but differs in that its contents are updated in the course of business, whereas a data warehouse contains static data. ) being phased out of use because of environmental regulations.

Products to be marketed by the alliance will include a new family of hydrofluoroethers under development by 3M; the existing hydrochlorofluorocarbon-blend-based Genesolv(R) product line and HCFC-141b, available from AlliedSignal; and the current line of 3M Performance Fluids.

As a result of the new marketing alliance, AlliedSignal has chosen to suspend development activity on its next generation solvent, HFC-356mcf, a hydrofluorocarbon (hardware) hydrofluorocarbon - (HFC) A suggested replacement for the chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) coolant gas used in chillers and air conditioners. , according to according to

Kevin M. Byrne, director of sales. The company had intended to have its new product replace the Genesolv and HCFC-141b product lines for solvent applications.

Allied Signal is seeking an extension from the Environmental Protection Agency Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), independent agency of the U.S. government, with headquarters in Washington, D.C. 3M's new hydroflouroether products are expected to be ready for selective sampling in late 1995 and available to the marketplace by mid-1996.

"We believe that our alliance with 3M will offer our customers product capabilities unmatched by anyone in the world," Byrne says. "And we intend to continue in a leadership role in the areas of regulatory affairs, product stewardship, equipment manufacturer interface and new product development."

The new marketing alliance will provide technical service to customers, and continue to work on applications development for existing and new products. The primary focus will be on industry segments affected by regulation whose products cannot be cleaned using water or semi-aqueous systems.

Byrne says AlliedSignal continues to urge its customers to seek out alternative technologies that meet environmental concerns by providing the critical combination of extremely low toxicity levels and low global warming potential Global warming potential (GWP) is a measure of how much a given mass of greenhouse gas is estimated to contribute to global warming. It is a relative scale which compares the gas in question to that of the same mass of carbon dioxide (whose GWP is by definition 1).  while delivering superior value in use in the intended application.

Jay Ihlenfeld, business director, 3M Engineering Fluids & Systems, notes that the new 3M/AlliedSignal alliance reflects 3M's interest in partnering with industry leaders, "such as our continuing relationship with Petroferm Inc., on the Advanced Vapor Degreasing (AVD AvD Automobilclub von Deutschland (German automobile club)

AVD Audio Video Design (Melbourne, FL)

) process."
