Allied Telesyn Supports Apple with New Micro Transceiver Family; UTP- and BNC-Compatible Products Priced Up to 45% Lower Than Competitors; First Fiber Optic ST and SMA AAUI Transceivers.MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 13, 1995--Allied Telesyn International Corp. (ATI (ATI Technologies Inc., Markham Ontario, http://ati.amd.com) A leading manufacturer of graphics chips and display adapters. Founded in 1985 by K. Y. Ho, Benny Lau and Lee Lau, ATI chips and boards are widely used by OEMs. ) announced today a new family of micro transceivers for Apple computer systems and printers and other PCs and networking hardware Networking hardware typically refers to equipment facilitating the use of a computer network. Typically, this includes routers, switches, access points, network interface cards and other related hardware. containing a 14-pin Apple Attachment Unit Interface (hardware, networking) Apple Attachment Unit Interface - (AAUI) A 14-position, 0.050-inch-spaced ribbon contact connector. Early Power Macintosh and Quadras had an AAUI (Apple Attachment Unit Interface) port (rectangular shaped) for Ethernet, which requires a transceiver. (AAUI (Apple AUI) Apple's version of the Ethernet AUI connector. See AUI and 10Base5. AAUI - Apple Attachment Unit Interface ) Ethernet port A socket on a computer or network device for plugging in an Ethernet cable. See WAN port. . The new family includes the first fiber optic transceivers to support the AAUI port. It also features UTP- and BNC-compatible transceivers that are priced as much as 45 percent lower than competitive offerings. These transceivers support the following Apple and PC products with AAUI Ethernet ports: Apple Power Macintosh computers, Apple Centris computers, Apple Quadra computers, Apple Powerbook 500 computers, Apple Laser Writer II and Pro series printers, plus products from Zenith and Tektronix that have AAUI Ethernet ports. The new ATI transceiver family includes the AT-MX60T for 10Base-T UTP UTP (uridine triphosphate): see uracil. (Unshielded Twisted Pair) See twisted pair. UTP - unshielded twisted pair , the AT-MX70 for 10Base2 BNC (hardware) BNC - A connector for coaxial cable such as that used for some video connections and RG58 "cheapernet" connections. A BNC connector has a bayonet-type shell with two small knobs on the female connector which lock into spiral slots in the male connector when it is twisted , the AT-MX80F with ST connectors for 10Base-FL/FOIRL fiber optic and the AT-MX90F with SMA connectors also for 10Base-FL/FOIRL fiber optic. The AT-MX80F and the AT-MX90F are the first transceivers to support AAUI compatible 10Base-FL/FOIRL fiber optic. "These transceivers are the first products we've designed specifically for Apple computers, and they're also the most competitive AAUI products on the market," said Jack Osborne, Director of Marketing at ATI. All micro transceivers have integral 0.5 meter cables with AAUI connectors and latches for the attached computer or other networked device. This cable and connector provide secure desktop or drop cable mounting. The transceivers are packaged in sturdy metal cases versus the plastic cases of competitive offerings, and have LED indicators for monitoring operation of the transceivers. All transceivers are fully compliant with IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, New York, www.ieee.org) A membership organization that includes engineers, scientists and students in electronics and allied fields. 802.3 standards and meet worldwide electrical and mechanical agency approvals. Pricing and Availability All products have a lifetime warranty and will begin shipment in March 1995. For more information, call 800/424-4284. -0-
