BOTHELL, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 20, 2003

Allied Telesyn, Inc. (www.alliedtelesyn.com), a world leader in network technologies for the access edge, today announced the availability of its AT-8700XL series of intelligent Fast Ethernet An earlier name for 100Mbps Ethernet. See 100Base-T.

switches. Providing Layer 2 and essential Layer 3 functionality, these cost-effective switches bring a high level of security and control to networks and are ideal for deployment at the access edge.

Offered in two fixed, yet flexible, configurations, the AT-8700XL switches were built to meet the needs of high-performance network services. The AT-8724XL is comprised of 24 10/100TX ports while the AT-8748XL features 48 10/100TX ports. Both switches include two expansion bays which can be populated pop·u·late

The GBIC converts the serial electrical signals to serial optical signals and vice versa.  bay modules. Offering a Redundant Power Supply option, AT-8700XL switches are suitable for mission-critical applications.

"The 8700XL series is a direct descendant of our highly successful Rapier family of Layer 3 switches, offering QoS and security at the access edge," says James Mustarde, Vice President of Sales & Marketing. "These essential features enable you to exercise control of the entry point of your network with capabilities once found only in the network core."

Designed for high-performance desktop and workgroup connectivity, the AT-8700XL series includes a suite of advanced switching features (IEEE 802.1Q IEEE 802.1Q (also known as VLAN Tagging) was a project in the IEEE 802 standards process to develop a mechanism to allow multiple bridged networks to transparently share the same physical network link without leakage of information between networks (i.e. trunking). These switches also feature enhanced QoS functionality, including wirespeed Layer 4 traffic classifiers, asymmetric bidirectional The ability to move, transfer or transmit in both directions.  bandwidth limiting, DiffServ and Hardware Access control lists.

The affordability of the AT-8700XL series enables customers to deploy Layer 3 functionality at the access edge, thereby creating "intelligent networks." Intelligent networks are those which efficiently use bandwidth from the core to the edge. Intelligence is important as converged networks become more prevalent because it allows traffic prioritization. Another aspect of intelligence is the ability to inspect traffic and stop malicious behavior at the edge before it enters the network core, an additional capability of the AT-8700XL family.

AT-8700XL products are a welcome addition to Allied Telesyn's comprehensive Layer 3 switch family, which includes the SB4000 modular, chassis-based series, 9800 Gigabit aggregation series and Rapier switch/routers. Now customers can deploy affordable, end-to-end, intelligent network solutions from the edge to the core.
