Allied Pilots Association issues statement regarding American Airlines' plans to buy US Airways Shuttle operations.


WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 29, 1997--Following the announcement earlier today by American Airlines that it has agreed to purchase the stock, warrants and debt of Shuttle Inc. and take over all operations between New York New York, state, United States
New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States. It is bordered by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the Atlantic Ocean (E), New Jersey and Pennsylvania (S), Lakes Erie and Ontario and the Canadian province of

) issued a statement regarding the transaction.

"It is management's prerogative to undertake a wide variety of transactions. Although we generally prefer that American Airlines grow internally rather than through acquisition, the Shuttle appears to be a unique opportunity for our company," said Captain James G. Sovich, APA president. "Accordingly, we have no particular objection to this deal. I should point out that APA will have to negotiate all necessary arrangements with American Airlines' management if the acquisition is completed succesfully."

APA issued its statement from Washington, D.C., where the association's board of directors has convened for a regularly scheduled quarterly meeting. American Airlines President Don Carty personally briefed the APA Board about the company's interest in acquiring the Shuttle in a meeting yesterday afternoon.
