Allied Cold Storage opens Rhode Island operations.

Allied Cold Storage is pleased to announce it has opened its fifth facility, a 235,000 sq. ft. cold storage warehouse and distribution center in Cranston, RI. The facility was formerly operated as a retail frozen and refrigerated products distribution center by Supervalu, Inc.

It is strategically located on Route 14 (Plainfield Pike), 1.5 miles west of Exit 4 on Route 1-295 and only 7 miles from 1-95, the main north/south Interstate corridor in Rhode Island.

Our new Cranston DC is the only full service Public Refrigerated Warehouse (PRW) operating in the State of Rhode Island. The state has not had a full service cold store to service its food industry since the closing of Providence Cold Storage in the early 1990's. The availability of this warehouse will be particularly important to the seafood industry in Rhode Island.

Total refrigerated storage capacity is 6,100,000 cu. ft. The state of the art modern high bay warehouse is fully sprinkled. It's totally racked storage has over 30,000 pallet positions. Storage temperature ranges are -20[degrees] to +50[degrees]F. to accommodate a full range of food products. The facility is HACCP, USDA and USFDA compliant. The refrigeration is a computer controlled two stage ammonia system. For the most efficient shipping and receiving, it has a 40,550 sq. ft. refrigerated 50 ft. deep truck dock with 34 doors with self leveling dock plates and seals and a computerized inventory control and reporting system. Dry storage, storage in transit and cross-dock programs are available. Security is provided by 24/7 central station monitoring of all burglar, fire and refrigeration systems.

This facility is an important step in our long term corporate strategy to expand our regional capacity to serve our customers. Part of this plan has been an expanded geographical coverage of the southeast New England market which includes the Southcoast of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and eastern Connecticut. The 75 acre site has available land for expansion of the warehouse and building sites are available for refrigerated or frozen food manufacturing facilities.
