earlier this year, we began an internal investigation and sent out approximately 5,000 letters to ascertain if our policyholders in this program understood what they purchased," said Grove. "As a result, we received 12 complaints. Even that low dissatisfaction rate was too high for us, so we began contacting the remaining 15,000 policyholders."

Grove said that "We also want to dispel any confusion about the fundamental difference between our policy and other recent controversial cases. Unlike those other cases, our policies are universal life insurance polices, designed specifically to provide retirement benefits. Also, our policies emphasize an annuitization option which the insured can use to provide a retirement income after age 65."

The Company is now working with the California Department of Insurance to understand how sales materials might have been used or misused as well as whether those materials were influential factors in the sales.

"Allianz of North America has a proud tradition of providing solid, dependable life products and we are eager to present our case to whatever forum is selected by the California Department of Insurance," said Grove.
