) stated today that weather related declines in cataract surgical procedures Surgical procedures have long and possibly daunting names. The meaning of many surgical procedure names can often be understood if the name is broken into parts. For example in splenectomy, "ectomy" is a suffix meaning the removal of a part of the body. "Splene-" means spleen.  coupled with the initiation of a limited, voluntary recall of certain AMO AMO - America's Multimedia Online  intraocular lenses will have an impact on first quarter 1996 operating results. However total company sales are still expected to be in double digit growth.

William C. Shepherd, chairman and chief executive officer, said, "We are optimistic about our prospects for the remainder of the year. Barring a worsening of these conditions, we anticipate that our surgical business will return to prior trends after the first quarter." Actual results for the quarter and the year will depend upon the reaction to the recall, as well as other factors effecting our businesses such as competitive conditions, the approval and performance of new products, contributions from recently acquired businesses, and the results of geographic expansion efforts.

Physicians have been notified of a limited, voluntary recall of certain AMO PhacoFlex II Model SI-30NB intraocular lenses and advised that intensive, scientific investigation to date have concluded that these lenses pose no safety or efficacy issues. No adverse events have been reported.
