) today announced that Stephen J. Ryan, M.D. will join the company's Board of Directors on September 23, 2002.

Dr. Ryan, an internationally recognized expert in the field of retinal diseases and ocular trauma, is the Dean of the Keck School of Medicine and Senior Vice President for Medical Care of the University of Southern California The U.S. News & World Report ranked USC 27th among all universities in the United States in its 2008 ranking of "America's Best Colleges", also designating it as one of the "most selective universities" for admitting 8,634 of the almost 34,000 who applied for freshman admission  as well as President of the Doheny Eye Institute and Grace and Emery Beardsley Professor of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Ryan is a Member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. In 2002 he was appointed as a member of the National Academies Committee on the Organizational Structure of the National Institutes of Health. He is a member and past President of numerous ophthalmologic organizations such as the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology and the Macula Society. He is the founding President of the Alliance for Eye and Vision Research (AEVR).
