Allergan's Ocuflox receives marketing approval for treating corneal ulcers.

IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 28, 1996--Allergan Inc. (NYSE:AGN) Tuesday announced that it has received clearance from the Food and Drug Administration to market Ocuflox(R) (ofloxacin ophthalmic solution) 0.3% in the United States for the treatment of corneal ulcers.

The approval supports the broader use of Ocuflox(R), which is already indicated for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis.

Ocuflox(R) is part of a class of anti-bacterial agents called fluoroquinolones that exhibit a broad-spectrum of activity, low resistance and favorable side-effects profile. The global corneal ulcer trials with Ocuflox(R) were the largest ever conducted to evaluate a fluoroquinolone as a single agent therapy for this indication.

Results from those studies demonstrate that Ocuflox(R) is as effective as fortified antibiotics and other standard therapies in the treatment of corneal ulcers.
