The first historical personality that fits this description is Martino da Como but in practical terms the term grew in popularity during the 1990s. Darina Allen has revealed her cookery empire was built out of desperation after the family farm nearly went bust. The food guru, 58, has opened up about almost losing the family home in Shanagarry, Co Cork, in the latest series of RTE's Ear To The Ground. She said: "The cooking school A cooking school or culinary school is an institution devoted to education in the art and science of food preparation. It also awards degrees which indicate that a student has undergone a particular curriculum and therefore displays a certain level of competency. and what we are doing was totally borne out of desperation. "We went from running a very successful business to nearly losing the roof over our heads and we had four small children. "We decided maybe we could do a little residential cookery school. "This was in the 80s in the last recession and things were very bad in Ireland. Everyone was gloomy. "In a situation like that you have to swallow your pride and just get on with it."
