Allen: We cooked to save bacon; COOKERY.
CELEBRITY chef Darina Allen has revealed her cookery empire was built out of desperation after the family farm nearly went bust.
The food guru, 58, has opened up about almost losing the family home in Shanagarry, Co Cork, in the latest series of RTE's Ear To The Ground.
She said: "The cooking school and what we are doing was totally borne out of desperation.
"We went from running a very successful business to nearly losing the roof over our heads and we had four small children.
"We decided maybe we could do a little residential cookery school.
"This was in the 80s in the last recession and things were very bad in Ireland. Everyone was gloomy.
"In a situation like that you have to swallow your pride and just get on with it."
Ear To The Ground is on RTE One, Thursday, at 7pm.
